As long as I've been here, I've seen a few threads on avatars, but I do not recall seeing one on the nature of our user names.

I'd be delighted to hear the enchanting tales that led to bizarre user names like rushfan4, Dean, Ivan_Melgar_M, Mr ProgFreak, progkidjoel and Tony R.

Seriously...what of you weird-os like Negoba, Atavachron, Garion81, p0mt3, The Doctor, A Person, Windhawk, UMUR, ZowieZiggy, sinkadotentree, ClemofNazareth, birdwithteeth11 and so forth?

Anyone who has listened to "The Lamb" knows where my username comes from.

This should be an intersting thread, though.  Some of these usernames on PA are quite cryptic.

I agree.  It could just be some strange coincidence that Slartibartfast is Brian's nickname from his honey.  Who knows.  Wink

When I signed up to this site I had no idea at all for a username.I wanted something with the word prog in it,but something a bit different. For some strange reason I thought of a proctologist(don't ask me why cause I still don't knowConfused) and just twisted it to TheProgtologist.

Well, of course I am a big fan the Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy.  I've always loved to try and get it as a user name or screen name.  Often someone else has already claimed it so I was pleasantly surprised to be able to get it here.  One variation that never seems to be claimed as a username is Slartbartfaster.  Also the e-mail address I've been using for many years is slartiba@...  No I'm not revealing the domain I already get waaay too much junk in that one now.  LOL   Plus I often have long hair and beard.  I've never designed an fjords, by the way, in case anyone wants to know.  I'm not entirely sure what I would have picked for here if it had been taken.  Maybe Ford Prefect.

Finnforest biography
FINNFOREST were formed in the mid-70's by Finnish brothers Pekka (guitar, bass) and Jussi Tegelman (drums) with synthesizer and keyboard player Jukka Rissanen. Mostly influenced by the MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA, their style also evokes early CAMEL, FINCH and CARAVAN. Their music is characterized by energetic and spirited guitar/organ interplay, interesting compositions and very good vintage 70's jamming overall. Unlike many fusion bands of that era, their (3) albums have a very under-produced, spontaneous feel.

I changed it to The Quiet One because my family considers me "a man of few words" and yes, they say that in english, it's not a translation. And also it's a reference to bass player John Entwistle who wrote a song entitled 'The Quiet One' reffering to himself as a quiet guy.

In the Conan the Barbarian short story The Scarlet Citadel, everyone's favourite barbarian fights a wizard who goes by the name of Tsotha-Lanti. Toaster Mantis, well that's a deliberate mispronouncation of that. It could also mean a robot insect which I think is a pretty cool visual image.

Another example of where assumptions can get you, since you're such a huge fan of Tangerine Dream (and rated their album Ricochet with a 5, I believe) I assumed you were named after that album. Tongue

Nope, definitely not. Wink

Mine is chosen to emphasize that I prefer internet anonimity, even to my best virtual friends. The underscore is an unwished must-have because someone else signed in as "someone else", about two years before me. But this guy has not logged in for more than three years now...

That makes me think... Shouldn't unused accounts be automatically deleted after some time, say a year, of inactivity? Why do we keep them? If someone wished to come back on the forum after a couple of years he could just register anew.

Mine comes rom a nickname I had vibe baby when I played drums in a few garage bands and jam sessions back in the mid 16th century.  Also from the fact that I use the exclamation Yeah Baby !  a lot especially when I execute a feat of daring, score a goal in hockey or soccer, win a chess game etc etc . An exclamtion of victory.I thought " vibrationbaby " was more original than just " The Vibe " or  " Yeah Baby ".

Blowin Free is a song by Wishbone Ash, and it's in my number one favorite album of all-time, so I decided to name myself after this catchy track name. Also, I said people should get it because there've been many references to the song when people called my name.

I'm a diehard Chicago Cubs fan...Ernie Banks has been the face of the organization since the 1950's and all around one of the greatest ambassadors for the game of baseball.

Boring story...

1st internet board I was on was the University of Illinois Basketball forum...our coach had made a comment about wearing orange undies "Once you go orange you never go back." I was a 94 grad, so my first board name was nevergoback94.

That became nevergoback and on one of the songwriting forums I used to go on frequently, people started saying negoba.

So since then I'm negoba.

ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz............

I think most people know mine is the protagonist from Ayn Rand's Anthem.

I still think it was a great book, and it was an important one in opening up alternative views at a time when I was I guess more of a Socialist than anything else.

I refuse to believe that your name did not come from Men Without Hats, who famously did the Safety Dance.

Haha...perhaps subconsciously. I was aware of the group (and song) in 2005, though I wasn't listening to it/them at the time of sign up.

You seem rather insistent on that last point.  Do people often mistake you otherwise?
