"Epic", in this context, is meant to describe their songs which are greater than 10 minutes in length. I made an exception for "Interstellar Overdrive" because, I mean...come on, it's "Interstellar Overdrive", how could I NOT included it in a list like this?

Anyhow-pick your favorite! My vote goes for first half of "Shine On", personally. "Dogs" is a very close second.

Echoes is my favorite (especially after my brother showed me the whole thing with Echoes synching up with 2001). My second favorite is one that kinda goes under the radar: Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast, which I think is one of their best songs.

First of all, just because a song is long doesn't mean it is an epic

secondly, I voted for one that definitely isn't an epic: Saucerful

but that's a false context; there is NO context in which the word epic is primarily based on the length of something.  Why didn't you say best songs over 10 minutes?

Echoes
IMO the only contender would be Shine on... If it were in one full track (I to IX)

Pigs for me.  Doesn't seem to be a very popular choice...but damn, it takes my breath away.  Of course this could also be said of Echoes, Atom Heart Mother etc., but Animals is my favorite Floyd release, and Pigs is its height for me.

The tipping factor, of course, are Wright's beautiful, stark glissandi.

1. The emphasis of this one is the great achievements etc.

2. and 3. not relevant

4. 10 minutes is by no stretch of the imagination "of unusually great size or extent" when it comes to progressive rock

Epic is a very multifaceted word. It can mean many things. In this case, in this very specific context, I have delegated it to mean songs over 10 minutes, because 10 minutes is a rather long time for a Pink Floyd song-notice how there are only a little more than ten?-and because it's easier to use this criteria than to make up some completely arbitrary system and have people asking why I included "Us and Them" and not "[fill in Personal Favorite Pink Floyd Song here].

You can continue to be pedantic, petty and misinformed, or you can hop off my jock and go somewhere else. I've done nothing wrong in regards to language or anything else. Why you insist on (wrongly) harping on my vocabulary errors is a mystery to me, but I'd request that you quit cluttering up the thread with this nonsense, if that's okay with you.

Just thought I'd mention, if it has not been mentioned before, Set The Controls For The Heart Of TheSun was usually performed at more than 10 mins and if one can have Interstellar Overdrive. and why not indeed! one should have this. To me this piece defines this era of PF more than any other.

Set The Controls on Ummagumma is faded half way through (this album really needs a re thought by PF.) I know it's one of the great live albums but it's still not good enough. With CD and DVD tecnology we could and should have a proper Ummagumma era live album. And if you see DG, RW, or NM you can quote me!Big smile

I have no idea which to vote. I assume Narrow Way and Sysyphus are there because PF performed them live not that we are officially supposed to know that unless we were there at 1969 and 1970 concerts. Not easy for me.Wink

As a slight matter of irrelevance/ irreverence DSOTM was performed as Eclipse, a single piece that is merely indexed. Wonder if that counts?

Interestingly the chord structure for Echoes is very similar (nearly the same) as for Dogs. Or is ot the other way around?

Anyway, another admittedly trite observation. Pink Floyd had epics that were albums, not just excerpts. So TDSOTM, The Wall, Animals, Shine On (maybe the whole WYWH), and Echoes and AHM etc are all epics. In other words The Wall is an entity as much as Echoes. Or looked at another way is Money, Dogs, Shine On et al are excerpts taken out of context. Unlike Saucerful fo Secrets which has related but not linked pieces as the 73 -83 releases.

If you think the above is the Pig's male genitalia just try listening to A Collection Of Great Dance Songs. For an album of 100% great material it doesn't half suck. Cry

There, I'm off to check out the PF filmography.

''Echoes'' isn't an album. It's a compilation that came out long after the Floyd was over. ''Meddle'', the album that the song ''Echoes'' comes from, came long before ''Animals'', so the similarities, if there are any, are indeed the other way around. ''Echoes'' came before ''Dogs''.

I don't mean Echoes the compilation. I mean the classic piece featured on Meddle. Echoes (the piece) is not an album of course. It is a themed epic though. As is the Wall for example. Epics and themed pieces are not necessarily limited by format. Hope I'm a tad clearer there.Ouch Sorry for anymisunderstanding. Embarrassed

Yes, he was given the boot. Mind you as a wage salve at $11K per week he wasn't exactly complaining. Especially after the Wall shows lost his bandmates lodsa dough (15K per show each) then he came out ahead.

What was interesting was founding PF member asking new guy DG if he could play in PF. DG told him "I'll get back to you."

No, it's not the same verion. The Live at Pompeii is a different recording than the one from Meddle (I even wonder if the Live at Pompeii may have been recorded before Meddle was released). And the Live at Pompeii version is, as far as I remember, complete, with the middle section and all, only that it is split in two (as Sine on You Crazy Diamond on the Wish you Were Here album); though I'm not really sure that it is split in all the releases of that video.

Posted By: Dellinger

I go with Shine On... I like better to think of it all as a 23 min epic, but if I have to choose, then it's the first half.

Posted By: uduwudu
Date Posted: October 28 2010 at 22:27
was released um, 39 years ago this Hallowe'en. 31 ovt 71. Pompeii scenes were shot over 4 - 9 Oct 71. AFAIK Echoes is split in all versions of the video. There are several versions as well - owing to some footage being lost as it was edited and re-released a few times over 72 -74. Some nonsense about wanting to be up to date. DSOTM being released etc.

The most ridiculous tihng... Seamus not only being on Meddle but retitled and appearing as Mademoiselle Nobbs in the film. (Increased royalties,?giving the dog a bone?) It doesn't quite ruin such classic material but hardly enhances it either.

What would be nice is an official release of the Echoes / Crystal Voyager video. All that slow motion waves and water footage that was played live (the Floyd and the filmmakers made an exchange agreement) would be rather appealing.

Posted By: Dellinger
Date Posted: October 28 2010 at 22:43
^ I don't find Mademoiselle Nobbs as puting down the Pompeii video, it's even somewhat enjoyable. And I think it's much less annoying than Seamus (perhaps because it doesn't include vocals). I love Live at Pompeii, with Mademoiselle Nobbs included. Strangely enough, I do feel Seamus puts down Meddle.

If it was a movie thing alone it would be amusing and fun. But as it's both a studio release, a live release, as well as a ...er, instrumental..Confused  Seamus, the dog, should not have been on the album. IMHO.
