I have a number of favorite drummers..just to be awkward. I'll choose Phil Collins in this instance..

I think my favorite drummer is actually Gavin Harrison. Sorry Gavin, it's hard to remember a guy who didn't just quit his 24-year-old band. -------------

And I miss Pierre tremendously ... not only was he fabulous to make Gong's music as good as it was, he also make Mike Oldfield look good on stage ... make sure you get the EXPOSED DVD for a total treat and then some ... and tears too ... because it is special!
Gong with Pip was jazz'y, with Chris was easy music ... but with Pierre it had a rock edge that fit and made the music stronger ... and yes, side 2 of YOU is the best exhibition of drumming ever done in rock music. The majority of drummers can not get off the 4 beats to even consider doing what Pierre did in there and did all the time in his sleep and then some! ------------- Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! I am sorry, but to all you proggers that may have missed The Who, in my opinion (and not so humble in this case) there is only one drummer that can seriously be regarded as better than the best. Keith Moon; QUADROPHENIA LIVE AT LEEDS WHOS NEXT TOMMY THE WHO SELL OUT These are albums, not tracks. Check them out. I am quite sure that Mr. Peart, Mr, Portnoy and Mr Collins would agree with me. |

You know ... the more I listen to that album the more I think that the drumming in it is exceptional and ... what really makes the album go around ... his touch and taste is impeccable ... and I am not sure that you can "teach" that at all ... you have to feel it and understand the music you are doing far better ... than just drumming or keeping time.
And this is what is missing in almost all the metronomic bands today that are considered "prog" ... and they aren't! ------------- Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told! www.pedrosena.com |

No one is disagreeing with that. Like Pierre, Keith was also quite non-conventional which helped the music tremendously ... and the amazing thing was/is that Pierre was a master musician (see him on Mike Oldfield's EXPOSED dvd), and he made all that knowledge seem like child's play to his ability to improvise and add touch and feel where there was none, or where Portnoy would just bang the snare drum even more ... every 4th since he doesn't know any other time!
Keith showed his mastery in "Who's Next" ... and how he could make the music sound and be even better with just a conventional drummer.
The point is ... that prog and progressive music these days, is really missing out on the incredible feel and touch that these people added to the music that helped make it famous ... and we still talk about it.
I would not exactly call Keith "progressive" but he is certainly one of the very best rock drummers ever. ------------- Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told! www.pedrosena.com |

To anyone interested in drummers, BBC radio 4 have just broadcast a program called "Beat it: The World of The modern drummer". From today (021010) you can listen to it on line for up to a week. Check it out here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00vkwvc It is pretty good and includes interviews with Phil Collins, Phil Selway etc. |
