So I just purchased KD's "Coyote". This will be my first experience with this band (and RIO/Avant-Garde, in general).

I'm rather excited to listen to it and I hope it's a great one Smile

Without spilling too much, how would you guys rate the album? One of your favorites of the year?; KD's best work?; etc.

I rate it 9 out of 10, but I'm a fan person. I did take me a lot to get into it (you might expect the same), since the shift in style is quite strong. It's more of a new-wave/goth meets psychedelic jazz album, definitely not the usual "prog" or the usual Kayo Dot. Not something to appeal too many tastes from PA; I can agree with all the takes on this album that I've seen so far (including **).

^ Yeah, I'm expecting it to be a grower. Sounds pretty interesting.

I'll post something later regarding my first listen.

Indeed the taste I was going for was avant LOL

I've been meaning to check out their previous albums...I know I definitely will in the near future.

Thanks for your comments guys, I'll appreciate any feedback  Big smile

It's a small risk and I only paid $4.95 for it on Amazon, so not too shabby Thumbs Up

The mp3 download on your thread, however, is not available anymore...what did that contain?

It was a download link for the same file that is being streamed in the other link (a full live performance of Coyote). Thanks for noticing, I removed the dead link.

Yeap. Someone ripped the online radio streaming and reuploaded it.

@Geo: IMO there aren't post-rock influences in Toby Driver's bands, but there are similarities, yes.

Its the best album I've heard from this year by some distance, in fact its about as good as their classic album Choirs of the Eye, which means its one of the best albums I have. Of course, I am a huge Toby Driver fanboy.

A good prog album, evoking prog in the 70s vein. The music seems to be well developed, none of the abrupt or tangential transitions that irk me in much modern prog.  But in terms of moods and emotions, it is a bit too one dimensional to hold my interest all the way through.

I definitely wouldn't call it evocative of the 70s, but I suppose people interpret music differently...LOL

It is a great album, though, and if you like it I would definitely agree with the recommendation to get Choirs of the Eye next.

That depends on what you associate with the 70s. 70s is not just Hammonds and symph prog, it was also the decade of Magma, Can, Kraftwerk and many other adventurous acts.  Like those bands, Kayo Dot are able to experiment within the framework of satisfying and cohesive development which is not my experience with modern prog.

That's just not right; you might want to edit/delete that review, mate.

I wouldn't review, for example, Porcupine Tree's "Fear of a Blank Planet" album only after listening to the live performance on the Anesthetize dvd. What if the performance/recording quality sucks compared to the actual album?

It's just not fair to the artist (who wants positive publicity of his work) and to the fan that wants to spread the word.

Ignorant beyond belief!

Toby Driver is a better composer than any of your pre-80's heroes. Even Frank Zappa doesn't come close to Driver as a composer, and I love Zappa just as much as you do... But could you explain why you don't consider Driver's music as such? What exactly is missing?

Coyote is definitely better than BLD...in fact some times I thought to myself, "Wow it's like the guy read my review of BLD and fixed everything."

Now I suspect he has read the review. (I don't take any credit, I just said, this is what I don't like about the album, and referenced Part the Second to show that they guy could do better)

Things just move and hold interest so much better.

And to Walter, listen to Weather Report's I Sing the Body Electric and then come back to Coyote. You might appreciate it more.

Finally, after a couple of hard and frustrating attempts to break the Toby Driver code, I'm finally digging one of his albums: Blue Lambency Downward is totally speaking to me. Nice!

I'll need to revisit Coyote soon!

ACR: I dunno, the review seemed to come from the POV of an emotionally conservative square. I mean the comment about your kids listening to it and everything, it just seemed like you have pre concieved notions about what music is allowed to do and are afraid of the dark or something. I'm not telling you Coyote's a great album, I haven't even heard it, but just reading your review you came off as something of a fuddy duddy. It's like Toby succeeded exactly in what he was trying to do, evoke the pain of losing a friend (and lover I've heard) to cancer and you were like "Well you're not allowed to do that, only sunshine and bunny rabbits please."

ACR you're a nice guy and this isn't meant as an attack, just saying what i think the problem with the review was.

Bonnek, if you can handle BLD, definitely come back to Coyote!

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

My vinyl just came in the mail.

I'm a little ticked because the edges got a little crinkled in shipping, but besides that it's really stunning. Not as great looking as the motW Part The Second, but I'll still take it.

I noticed that Toby shipped this using his return address. Seems so strange that an artist could do this without being super stalked. It's such a different dynamic from being a child when I listened to mostly mega-bands like The Beatles or Led Zeppelin.

I didn't want to say anything, but yeah I am too. I looked at his street on google maps street view.

I feel like such a creep for doing it, but I couldn't resist. Strange how music can make you so voyeuristic.

I didn't think of that, but now I feel compelled to do it. LOL If you get Mia's address though, make sure to remember me. Tongue

Anyone here going to the Tartar Lamb II launch party? I know Joel donated that much, but he (obviously) can't attend.

Unfortunately at the time I didn't have the money to donate that much. I wish it was still open, I'd drop $100 their way.

I don't have her address, but her and I were born on the same day if that helps you in any way.

I can't attend the Tartar Lamb II party, seeing as it is halfway across the country for me. Unhappy

Still waiting on my PtS vinyl I ordered in October, though it's probably sitting in the mail room at my dorm right now.

That's nothing. My PtS vinyl (numbered as ANTI-001, I think it's the first copy) came warped pretty bad. No issues with playing though, sounded nice through gramps' 80's Technics turntable.

I left it at his house under other 50 albums and I'll come back in a month or so. Maybe it'll unwarp, dunno.

That sucks.

What kind of a scam is Toby running here with these faulty vinyls?

It's at least harmless in that it doesn't bother him or really invade his privacy at all.

What's it tied with?

They couldn't find any trace of it anywhere in the world.

It arrived five months later

I was supposed to get a "promo" CD for this Italian avant band we were evaluating when I was on the team - so weeks go by and it never shows, I figure the band just decided F it and decided not to send.

I received the CD about 6 months later.

Well, it's partially my fault. I got the cheapest shipping there was (thanks, mom), and you can't really trust the mail guys in this country.

That happened to me too with the USPS. I ordered from a guy via amazon. When the cd hadn't come I contacted him. He said the post office had no record of the package existing so he gave me a refund.

I got the cd about a year later. You couldn't even see the packaging because it had so many USPS mailing labels on it. The thing had been to about 25 states in that time. I have no idea how that happens.
