THROWING IT ALL AWAY

This is a commercial Pop Rock ballad, still good and with some quality, with a very good guitar riff by Mike Rutherford and good Pop lyrics about a broken love relationship. Tony Banks was playing some new keyboard sounds which gave him some "musical identity" in the eighties. I prefer the live versions of this song than the studio version, because the songs from the "Invisible Touch" album sound a bit "Computer Programmed", but the band played them better in concert.

"Do the Neurotic" sounds a bit like the song called "The Brazilian" from the same album. After listening to this song I understood why it wasn`t included in the album. It was also included in their "Archives 2" Box Set, and at the End Credits of their "Invisible Touch Tour" video. It sounds like filler, with Phil Collins again using the electronic drums a lot.

Throwing It All Away was another in a string of pop songs released by Genesis in 1986 on 45 rpm singles. Throwing It All Away was basically a pop rock ballad, no better and probably worst than previous ballads the band wrote going back to the Duke album. No signs of anything relating to progressive rock can be found here.

The B side was a song called Do the Neurotic which is an energetic instrumental that is probably better than most of the stuff found on the Invisible Touch album. It found its way onto the Archive 2 box set, so really, there's no need to seek out this single unless you are a completionist. Otherwise, this is one single worth throwing away.

Okay, here we have a really bad pop-ballad and a somewhat interesting instrumental. "Throwing it All Away" expresses my feeling about this entire album. This is a better than average Collins era pop song. What else can I really say about it other than its competent and well played and was a hit. The B-side is nothing at all special and is rather poor even by late Genesis standards, Neither essential or dreadful worthy of a 3. ... (read more)
