Entropia biography
Originally founded in 2007 by original members Michał DZIEDZIC (guitars, vocals), Marek CENKAR (bass, vocals) and Patryk BUDZOWSKI (drums), ENTORPIA is a Tech/Extreme Progressive Metal band from Oleśnica, Poland. In 2009, Damian DUDEK (keyboards) joined and was later followed by Michał DUDA (guitars).

Originally, the band followed the proven vetrans like NEUROSIS and ISIS of the post-metal movement and this is evident on their 2009 demo "Let's Leave Before This Place Thaws" and their first EP "Chimera". From there, the band developed their music to introduce a more progressive rock style also adding elements of electronic music and shoegaze. Their first full-length album "Vesper" was released in 2013, and it shows the music developing into more elaborate compositions featuring slow and low guitar riffs inspired by sludge and post-metal music while using growling vocals and heavy guitar riffs mixed in with keyboard sections making for an interesting combination of genres.

At this point, DUDA was replaced by Kuba COLTA as guitarist and in 2016, "Ufonaut" was released. The music now was featuring the vocals being pushed back while guitars, samples and the rhythm section began to be more emphasized. The music was becoming more melancholic, psychedelic and trance-like while maintaining an overall progressive metal aspect. Their album "Vacuum", released in 2018, sees further exploration of this style with more experimentation added into the mix thus further stretching the boundaries of progressive metal. Overall, the style is a black, extreme prog metal with heavy reliance on their post-metal roots and interesting shades of psychedelia and sludge.

Fans of GREAT OLD ONES, ISIS, DECLINE OF THE I, ORANSSI PAZUZU and ALTAR OF PLAGUE should find much to love from ENTROPIA.

Entropia Tech/Extreme Prog Metal

Review by ssmarcus

5 stars What did I just listen to?! I am only a few listens in and I am already certain that this album will be on my short-list for my favorite of 2023. I suppose the best way to describe the music on this record is as the halfway point between the atmosphere of Ulcerate and psychedelic sludge of Intronaut. But make no mistake, the music here is utterly unique. I have seen other reviewers and outlets refer to this record as black metal. With the exception of the record's sparse vocals, Total has, thankfully, very little to do with black metal. Black metal is an insidious, cynical, and nihilistic genre of music that is utterly at odds with the atmosphere and life-affirming aspiration of the music on this record. Black metal exists in opposition to the emotionally complex reality that this Entropia is inspiring us to live with. The music here, like life itself, can definitely get ugly. But its intermingled with a complex beauty that is always bubbling just below the surface before dispersing through our beings as life affirming contentment, driving us to ever greater heights of feeling and expression.

I know nothing about this band or their previous releases. This changes TODAY!

3 stars Listening diary 15th February, 2021: Entropia - Vacuum (post-black metal, 2018)

A really interesting album, even if it isn't a wholly enjoyable one. The recent fusion of psychedelic rock with extreme metal, led by Oranssi Pazuzu and Hail Spirit Noir, has led to some of my favourite albums in the genre of all time, and here Entropia take it to new heights by including what are almost some disco-esque rhythms in a couple of songs here. It's utterly bizzare but oddly groovy and I can definitely see it becoming a decent sound with a bit more refining. But as much as this has some unique textures and compositional decisions, it doesn't quite captivate me throughout on a substance level, with a lot of the songs appearing to miss notable riffs or melodies. It's still got a great psychedelic production and for most of the album that's enough to carry it.

6.2 (2nd listen)
