Crow biography
CROW is a tribal psych/space band from Whitstable/Kent, formed in the early 1990s. Their recordings from 1992/93 were only released on cassette in limited numbers which makes them sought-after collectors' items. The band had a classic minimalistic line-up with guitar/vocals (Chris Clark), bass (Mike Ashbee) and drums (Martin Steadman) supported by Mark Dixon who contributes some Didgeridoo.

One live and two studio cassette albums were recorded. 'Medicine Wheel' (1992) with the standout track 'Conditioning' has Hawkwind/Ozric Tentacles leanings based on a strong wah-wah and delay guitar technique and tribal drums. 'The Tides Of Apsaroke' (1993) with a clearer production is devided in two parts with more defined contrasts between heavier and atmospheric moments.

CROW gigs became legendary for the collaborations with the Fire-Jugglers of the Kent Circus School who provided stirring visual accompaniment to the hypnotic rhythms. Plans to record a CD failed unfortunately. The band played their last live performance in September 1995 at the Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone and split afterwards, after which the members continued in other bands.

CROW reformed in 2008 to play on a private birthday party and there are also plans for a tribute show to their former promoter Brian Steele at the Leas Cliff Hall. Hopefully the band will decide to continue and to reissue their songs on compact disk or vinyl soon.

3 stars This band has never released a vinyl or compact disc so far what is very careless compared to the quality of their songs they recorded. Only music cassettes are existing. Besides the fact this are rarities with a low number of copies and quite unavailable - who really uses a cassette player yet? So first of all I strongly recommend to take action - it's worth it!

The songs of this production are obviously provided with HAWKWIND and OZRIC TENTACLES leanings. Remarkable are the delay and wah-wah drenched guitar, a hypnotic tribal drumming and what is typical for many psych bands - vocals are very rare, only given with some mantras.

Ayermandominar is starting somewhat clumsy but soon hurries up reminding me of MR. QUIMBY'S BEARD with wah-wah guitar work. Some effects simulating the crying of the whales are interspersed at the end and the song is made in an interesting trancy mood even if it contains some tempo changes. Other standout tracks are the gripping Circles underlaid by Mark Dixon's didgeridoo and the epic Conditioning with high-speed jamming deluxe.

Hopefully the band decides to continue and to reissue their songs on compact disk or vinyl soon for having the chance to purchase this interesting recordings which are first of all recommended to fans who are swirling around the Hawkwind and Tentacles circles - 3.5 stars really.

Thanks to Rivertree for the artist addition.
