A((wake)) biography
Portland, Oregon's A((WAKE)) is an experimental progressive rock band making waves across the Pacific Northwest. Originally formed as a three piece instrumental post-rock group, Cameron TAYLOR, Ian ENGBLOM and Brian LAWSON recorded what would be A((WAKE))'s first demo. Embracing the influential styles of bands like ISIS and MASTODON, "The Crescent" EP was released in 2005 and was immediately followed by nu...merous live performances throughout the I-5 corridor. Their energetic live show, coupled with the trio's dynamic and hard hitting sound, quickly gained them momentum in the Northwest music scene.

Following the success of "The Crescent", A((WAKE)) released "Northern Lights" in late 2007. The threesome's second EP showcased a more aggressive and complete sound that was well received by fans and music critics alike. The release was supported by more live performances throughout the Northwest, local radio airplay and expansion of the band's reach overseas. "Northern Lights" would ultimately signal the end of the band's instrumental identity, as vocalist and keyboardist Ben JACKSON joined A((WAKE)) in 2009. With his vocal influences rooted in the echoes of Mike PATTON, Tom WAITS, Layne STANLEY and Frank BLACK, the addition of JACKSON to the group's ranks brought an influx of creativity and originality that shaped the band's new character. The eclectic mix of JACKSON's vocal styles, combined with his cerebral lyrics, gave the lineup the final piece needed to form the group's current energizing and refreshing style.

Now, A((WAKE)) has released their first full length album with JACKSON at the helm. Self-produced with longtime friend and engineer Jeanot LEWIS-ROLLAND, the band's self-titled debut is a concept record which blends diverse guitar work, percussion, and soaring vocals into a contiguous set of rock movements which are sure to make rock listeners beg (and weep) for more. Covering such themes as the struggles of self-identity, navigation through an estranged modern world and the links formed between humans and their environment, A((WAKE))'s new album will continue to fuel the band's momentum and drive them to the crest of the Northwest rock scene.

4 stars It's been a while since I've heard a Post Metal album that was done right, or at least one that did sound as such to my ears!

I had no previous knowledge of A((WAKE)) before approaching their 2011 band-titled debut album and the initial experience was a pleasant one but it would eventually take me quite some time to actually sink my teeth into this release. There are numerous reasons for this slow but steady acknowledgment of this album's true potential, among which is it's hefty length and ambitious content, but the effort does indeed pay off in the long run.

My initial mention of the Post Metal term might be considered to be slightly misleading since A((WAKE)) sometimes prefers to boarder their style on a mix between heavy (i.e. extreme) and atmospheric metal learnings but that's what I personally consider to be the true ideology of the Post Metal sub-genre! Anyone expecting merely a smooth/atmospheric music experience might as well seek out any of the numerous releases under the Post Rock sub-genre. This album is a bumpy ride, but the bumps are intentional and definitely enhance the overall experience by keeping the listener on the edge of the seat. This is put to an even greater effect by omitting breaks between the compositions, thus letting the individual tracks interweave with one another.

The most surprising thing about this debut album is the band's ability to deliver a solid Post Metal experience that boarders on the level that was experienced 15 years earlier on Tool's Ænima. That 1996 release pretty much created a firm assumption in the back of my mind that there was nothing more left to explore in this sub-genre. Experience is the key to realization of ones past mistakes and I've certainly learned another valuable lesson by listening to A((WAKE))!

3 stars "Northern Lights" is the debut full-length album by US, Portland, Oregon based technical/progressive metal act A((WAKE)). The band have released an EP called "The Crescent" in 2006 so "Northern Lights" is not as such their debut release.

The music on the album is fully instrumental technical/progressive metal with post metal leanings. There are 5 tracks on the album but the opening track is more of an intro. The music is generally pretty complex with the clean guitar post metal parts adding some variation to the otherwise technical and heavy proceedings. The three musicians that make up A((WAKE)) are very skilled and their considerable skills are one of the greatest assets on this album.

The sound production is of high quality. Very heavy with lots of bottom but still clean. A very suiting sound for the music.

While I do enjoy "Northern Lights" to some extent due to the high technical level of the musicianship and the occasional atmospheric parts, which are quite enjoyable too, I ultimately think the music screams for a vocalist. The music is not varied enough to be instrumental IMO and I would strongly suggest that the band find themselves a lead vocalist before recording their next album. Itīs of course an aquired taste but thatīs my advice. A 3 star (60%) rating is still warranted though and the album does feature lots of promise and intriguing ideas, so itīs probably one of those cases where you shouldnīt just trust the reviewer, but give it a listen yourself.

4 stars I thought this was a diamond in the ruff, I love finding bands that aren't main stream, plus they're from US so that's a plus, because metal bands come a dime a dozen in the US, but really technical amazing bands from the US can be a rare jewel indeed, anyway this is a really cool album with its atmospheric complex musical array. I would suggest giving this a listen if your other records are getting a bit boring and you want to spice things up. Also did I mention this instrumental metal !!! PLUS PLUS PLUS for me. I love instrumental music. Its musicians music.
Thanks to The T for the artist addition. and to Rune2000 for the last updates
