Orthodox biography
ORTHODOX is trio from Sevilla, Spain who models their image, with full robes and pointed hoods, on the Catholic penitential brotherhoods of their home town. The city holds processions throughout the week leading up to Easter known as "Semana Santa."

Their debut album "Gran Poder" was released in 2006 on Alone Records (also released as a 2 LP Vinyl limited edition on Southern Lord records). The "Gran Poder" title is a reference to one of these brotherhoods: Hermandad de Jesus de Gran Poder (Brotherhood of Jesus of the Great Power), that was founded in 1431. ORTHODOX having reference to the Catholic religion might seem a bit paradoxical, but the procession throughout the week focuses on some stage of Jesus' suffering on the way to, or immediately after, the crucifixion. In interviews, ORTHODOX has described themselves "a pagan view of Christianity" and the attraction to "its mysticism, its spirituality and its concept of ritual."

In 2007, they released their second album "Amanecer en Puerta Oscura" on Alone Records (Europe) and Southern Lord (US).

In 2008, they did a split with OTESANEK, LOSS, and MOURNFUL CONGREGATION calling the EP "Four Burials" that was released on Battle Kommand Records.

In May of 2009, ORTHODOX has released their third studio album "Sentencia."

WHY THIS BAND IS IN THE ARCHIVES:

ORTHODOX uses many stylistic elements of doom and post metal. Their compositions are eerie, haunting, and tortured. Should be a welcome addition to extreme and post metal fans. They were approved by the Prog Metal Team and are very highly recommended!

Orthodox Experimental/Post Metal

Review by toroddfuglesteg

4 stars I took decided to check out this Spanish band when I did the interview with them one year ago. So when this album appeared, I took the plunge.

The name "Orthodox" kind of paint the band into the orthodox music genre. A German death metal band with the same name felt that when I interviewed them ten years ago. Their music never deviated from standard death metal. The same can be said about the Spanish band with the same name too. They are very much in the old style doom metal genre. Think Black Sabbath (the song), St Vitus and Candlemass. Think the whole Hellbound record label and you get this band. If that album had been alive today, Orthodox would had been signed by them.

Then again........ Orthodox spreads their tentacles both towards uber-orthodox doom metal and towards the likes of post rock and avant-garde. In this respect, I would have no hesitation label this band as an avant-garde doom metal band.

The sound on this album is crystal clear and muddy at the same time. We are talking distorted guitars and vocals. Add some Hammond organs to the mix too and we get a very heavy album. No less than heavy as a tonne of bricks. The tempo is syrupy/funeral doom slow though and I guess sludge metal is also a good label. Some of the songs here are really long and all songs have a bit of a cathedral feeling. I was into that type of music back then and this album has rekindled my interest in this genre again.

The quality is very good on an album which brings back good memories from the doom metal era. I am unashamed fan of doom metal so this is an album up my alley. This is also an album I really enjoy so I up the ante here and put it up as an excellent album for those of us into a bit more avant garde music than Journey, Yes and Genesis.
