Founded in New York, USA in 2006

ZEVIOUS are a trio based in New York City, consisting of cousins Jeff and Michael Eber (drums and guitar respectively) and Johnny De Blase (bass). Mike Eber and DeBlase first met in 1999 when attending college in Allentown (Pennsylvania), and, over the following years, played together in several rock, funk and jazz projects. Eber eventually moved to NYC in 2004, while the following year DeBlase moved to Philadelphia. On the other hand, Jeff Eber, who had been extensively touring the USA with his experimental progressive metal band DYSRHYTHMIA, settled in NYC in 2005, where he met up with his cousin and DeBlase with a view to starting a jazz-rock project. So ZEVIOUS was born.

The band's first gig took place in the summer 2006 at Teaneck (New Jersey), with all the band members playing acoustic instruments. DeBlase decided to move to NYC in 2007, and shortly afterwards ZEVIOUS started recording their self-titled debut album, released in 2008.

After the album's release, the band started developing a new, more experimental sound, and replaced their acoustic instruments with electric ones. Their second album, "After the Air Raid", released in 2009 by Cuneiform Records, came as the culmination of two years of composing and performing live across the north-eastern part of the US. The album was recorded and mixed by Colin Marston of tech/extreme prog-metal band BEHOLD...THE ARCTOPUS.

4 stars Since forming in 2007, Mike Eber (Smother Party), Jeff Eber (Dysrhythmia), and Johnny DeBlase (Sabbath Assembly, Many Arms) have sought to blur the lines between prog, jazz, and metal as Zevious. The band released their self-titled debut in 2008 which featured a more traditional acoustic sound and hinted at the compositional style the band was beginning to develop. Soon after, the band caught the attention of Cuneiform Records and released 'After The Air Raid' in 2009, abandoning the traditional sound of their first record for a more power-trio style involving louder volumes with a leaning toward melodic/polymetric compositions. The subsequent years marked a period of frequent touring and musical development for the band. In 2013 they released their second record for Cuneiform, 'Passing Through The Wall', which is where I first came across them, giving them a 5* review , saying that they wouldn't know what to do with 'a straight 4/4 time signature and verse/chorus number if it hit them over the head with a baseball bat.'

Well, nothing has changed, although since Cuneiform are no longer really releasing albums (still can't believe that a label as influential as they have had to drastically change their business model to survive), they have now moved on and for their latest album are signed with Nefarious Industries. The instrumental trio are still pushing that garage, metal, new wave underground mentality, but bringing that into line with fusion, jazz, RIO, doom, post rock and even trance to create something that is incredibly intense and powerful. It is as subtle as a sledgehammer, and really can cause headaches, but is also melodramatic and alluring. It is music which is compelling, bringing the listener in, shutting the door, and then bombarding them with sounds that feel almost as if they are part of a waterboarding experiment, yet even though the door is unlocked there is no desire to walk back out again. This isn't easy music to listen to, but by giving it the time it deserves the listener comes away having had an amazing experience.

5 stars I don't know how these guys did it, but they've essentially made a progressive garage rock album with the speed, technicality, and fury of tech death, and the mechanical edge of industrial rock. And on top of that, this is simply a masterpiece. "Entanglement" is a pertinent example: a driving, guitar-esque bass sets the scene for an exploratory guitar, with perfect drum backing, all played in the style of math. Ever heavy and energetic, and the sounds here do feel like metal - not in the musical sense, but in the sense that the music brings to mind cold steel. Everyone plays excellently, making a wall of solid sound that is at once entertaining and experimental. This doesn't pass through walls, but smashes through them. A spectacular record, highly recommended to math and tech death fans more than avantheads, but still recommended all around.

5 stars The trio of guitarist Mike Eber, drummer Jeff Eber, and bassist Johnny DeBlase started in 2006 as a 'normal' jazz group before commencing their own very different fusion journey. They brought in loads of influences from other musical styles such as progressive (King Crimson being an obvious band that they have been paying attention to) and technical metal as well as moving more into improvisational to create something that is fusion in it's very truest sense, and also truly progressive. There are also weird time signatures, and drum rhythms and patterns that point towards Meshuggah as another influence: showing yet again that although these guys are jazz, they are very much pushing the boundaries of both it and progressive rock.

This is their third album, and I am going to have to dig out the other two as well, as these guys can play. I mean, they can really play. I don't think that they would know what to do with a straight 4/4 time signature and verse/chorus number if it hit them over the head with a baseball bat. Although Mike is often the lead 'voice' that is only to be expected, but his cousin Jeff isn't afraid to try to dominate proceedings, and the same goes for Johnny as well. But, somehow all three of them manage to keep their own creative reins in check just enough so that we get an incredibly complex montage of music as opposed to everyone powering in over the top. There are some amazing fusion albums coming out at present, but this is one of those vying to be at the very top of the heap. It is challenging at times, but incredibly welcoming at others, and if you want your music to be complicated and moving in different directions yet somehow always making sense then this is for you. www.cuneiformrecords.com

4 stars ZEVIOUS are a power trio out of the USA playing all instrumental music that is dark and heavy. The guitar is often angular playing over top. I really like their sound. Imagine ONE SHOT without keyboards and you have an idea. The band is made up of cousins Mike and Jeff Eber on guitar and drums respectively, in fact Jeff also drums for a band called DYSRHYTHMIA. The fat bass lines are courtesy of Johnny DiBlase. By the way Mike and Johnny wrote all the tracks here.

"Where's the Captain" is so good with the chunky bass, pounding odd metered drumming and the guitar soloing over top. Angular guitar before 2 minutes. This is intricate yet powerful. Check out the drumming late. "Come Cluster" is dark and more laid back. I just laugh at the huge bass lines and the amazing drumming here. Laughing as in over-joyed. It turns more aggressive after 3 1/2 minutes then settles back. The drums come to the fore before a minute on "Mostly Skulls". Tasteful angular guitar and thumping bass join in. "The Ticket Exploded" is dark with sounds coming and going. It's building before 3 minutes then it calms right down 3 1/2 minutes in. A good Halloween song.

"The Noose" has lots of bottom end as the angular guitar plays over top. "Inciting" is more uptempo.Great sound 2 1/2 minutes in. "Gradual Decay" features prominant drumming on this mid paced tune. Guitar and bass are more in the background here until the guitar comes to the fore before 4 minutes. "The Ditch" sounds great when it settles back a minute in and the guitar joins in. Check out the bass before 5 minutes ! "After The Air Raid" is dark and haunting. The guitar makes some noise on "The Children And The Rats" 30 seconds in then it settles back. It does this again fairly quickly then not again until after 3 1/2 minutes where it turns intense to the end.Incredible. "Glass Tables" has some fantastic drumming on it early on.The guitar before 1 1/2 minutes starts to groove. Okay now he's sending smoke signals. It settles after 2 1/2 minutes then kicks back in hard.

This is complex and in a style that I love. A very solid 4 stars.

Thanks to raff for the artist addition. and to Quinino for the last updates
