The Egocentrics biography
The :Egocentrics are a Romanian psychedelic band from Timišoara, consisting of guitarist Brenn, bassist Jess and drummer Hera. Very little is known about this band as they prefer to keep a low profile information-wise and speak through enigmatic but powerful concert performances and, as of recent, recorded material.

The band came to international attention when still playing only local venues, as a consequence of releasing the debut EP "Mystic Initiation" in 2008. The EP was self-financed and recorded in a local studio with the band members exercising their production talents for the first time but, contrary to how that might sound, the material received positive reviews on Cosmic Lava or The Ripple Effect. Consequently, the band was soon signed up by German label Nasoni Records and a full album was recorded in August 2009 during a very intense, continuous 12 hours session. Later, additional sounds (xylophone, additional percussion, tube driven synths through moog amplifiers etc.) were added and the album titled "Love Fear Choices And Astronauts" was released on April 1st, 2010. The album is currently receiving extremely positive reviews from Lowcut (Den), Psychotropic Zone (Fin), StonerRock.com, Sleeping Shaman (UK), Lords Of Metal (Nl), etc.

The music is an intense, heavy epic build-up of spacey structures and timbre explorations with a solid back-bone, slightly "metallic". In order to balance this side of the music, a dynamic quality coming from tendencies towards improvisation, ambient and jazz provides relief and flavour. A lot of genres tags can be invoked, such as stoner rock, psychedelic rock, post-metal and jam band, but the best way to describe the range of influences and similarities of the superb and eclectic musical bouquet would be to quote the bands confessed interest in MOTORPSYCHO, CAUSA SUI, COLOUR HAZE, BRANT BJORK, JIMI HENDRIX, 35007, MONKEY3, CAPTAIN BEYOND, CAMEL, KING CRIMSON or NEUROSIS.

3 stars The :EGOCENTRICS have come back, with more acceptable, more stoner creation titled "Center Of The Cyclone" in 2011. It's said this album was recorded 4 months after their first album released. Although the debut one is full of traditional, orthodox space rock, the following stuff consists of 7 tracks each of which is shorter than everything in the previous album. Every single song has heavy, stoner moments, and pop, catchy melody lines. Guess their newer soundscape should be more appreciated on stage too, not sure such an obvious musical affinity has got to be their purpose or goal for constructing egocentric world though ? the most closest to the first album as for ultimate space world is the seventh call "The Unknown Sings" really.

The first golden road "A Road Less Travelled" sounds more leaning towards one of stoner rock legends Sleep rather than towards a space rock one. Quite comfortable are streaming guitar fuzz and smooth dreamy rhythmic parts, especially drumming. Simple but powerful melodic hurricane should be invasive also the last masterpiece "Lost And Found" apparently. The following "Off The Center" would remind the audience of the similar vein to 90s alternative grunge rock / metal that should be approved by every hard rock fan, I suggest. More of Crossover atmosphere can be heard via "Sink Or Swim" filled with explosive guitar plays and simple, mellow melodic strategies. Swift, mad distortion in "Blissful Idiot" will be squeezed into our inner mind and make us more idiotic. On the other hand, "Intuition And Coincidence" is created with more and more darker ambience like a grudge upon the inferno.

It's a pity they have not released any material since 2011 until now (February, 2018) but please let me say you could take time for your third album?

3 stars This album "Love Fear Choices and Astronauts" was released by a Romanian psychedelic progressive / space rock act The :EGOCENTRICS as their debut album, that is flooded with intensive fuzzy, shoegaze guitar plays and repetitive, spacey, a tad stoner rhythm formations. Basically their sound / melody style might be extremely inspired by space rock legends like Hawkwind or Ozric Tentacles, and strictly follow the footsteps of the vanguards. No musical innovation worthy of special mention nor original eccentricity is there but their instrumental technique and psychedelic sound texture are immersively matured and crystallized. Much appreciated also with the fantastic sleeve picture.

From the first strike "Spacewulf" their deep, sharp-edged psychedelia will be explored bombastically. The audience would get immersed in such a convoluted space entrapment definitely, let me say. There's no suspicion this soundscape would be their pleasure, with no consideration but simple feeling. On the other hand the following "20 12" has naiver atmosphere and gentler sensation. Their fantastic stoner spice should be effective especially in this track. "Bright Dawn Of The Soul" is another attraction of a down-tempo merry-go-round. Sit down and listen carefully, as if they would say so. We can hear something ethnic and tribal via the last "Mystic Initiation", that sounds basically typical in current psychedelic / space scene ... interesting guitar confusion is in the middle part though.

About 49 minute egocentric space world is full of authentic soundscape called as "space rock". This expression should be kinda comfort of psychedelic progressive / space rock fans but cannot be thought innovative. Guess it's finer to attend their gig nonetheless.

3 stars Romanian The:Egocentrics are another interesting newcomer in 2010 - they offer a mix of stoner, post and psych/space rock provided with a proper progressive essence. Which means there is much more than a simple stoner flavour in here - even though the band is often reduced to this category. Now released on the famous German NASONI label 'Love Fear Choices And Astronauts' comprises four lengthy tracks beyond the ten minute mark, totally instrumental. Rather varied jams, constantly mixing up heavy psych and cosmic floating parts.

When you ask about the uniqueness, the aspect what differentiates them from other bands I would say it's Brenn's guitar work offering a great bandwith. Best described for the opener Spacewulf where he plays a very sensitive part. 2012 however starts with a heavier, rather Jimi Hendrix related style, later though evolving into another spacey mood. Don't know why exactly, but Bright Dawn Of The Soul reminds me of Robin Trower's best days (Bridge Of Sighs) in parts ... from the heavier side of life too ... but again you won't miss a gliding relaxed excursion included in between.

The last minutes of Mystic Initiation then offer a gripping space rock interlude underlaid with samples, the album highlight in my opinion. 3 and a half stones ... ehh, stars ... are well deserved for this solid production. To name comparable bands for a proper orientation I would choose Samsara Blues Experiment, My Sleeping Karma, Earthless ...
