GIANLUCA FERRO

Gianluca Ferro is one of the most acomplished prog metal guitarists in last decade. He played over the years with prog metal bands like Heart of Sun, Time Machine, etc and has a solo career for some years now, in both cases Ferro is an excellent musician and composer, showing to us listiners that he needs a place on the podium for sure. This is his second solo effort from 2010 named Unheimlich issued at SG records. I had great expectations with this album, knowing Heart of Sun and Time Machine and how great job he done there, this album for sure not desepoints at all. Maybe little hard to get into at first spin, after 3-4 rounds is a total grower, at least for me, brilliant skills has this man and above all a perfect and crystal sound, makes from this Unheimlich a winner in this genre. He knew how to combine the riffs, the sherd, with progressive elements and to create something realy valuble in this field, this album is no noodling album, the originality is almost all over the album, the skills and both arrangements and talent is melted in a great manner. he remind me in places with John Petrucci's solo abum Suspended animation but aswell with bands like LTE or Canvas Solaris, progressive metal elements melted and combined with fusion arrangements. From cruchy guitar parts and fat sound like on opening tracks Olympia's Strangely Mechanical Actions, Solaris to mellow and full of finess parts like on Life in a raindrop, excellent piece, Gianluca Ferro done a great job here, oscilating from fast to slow , from edgy parts to mellow always in agreat manner, with talent and originality. Also besides guitar parts the rest of the instruments realy shine, bass and drums are all ovbe rthe place, complex and pointing exactly when needed, excellent job aswell from musicians involved. The keyboards parts are done by Ferr and are ok, even great in places but not so great as his guitar chops, only good. So almost a perfect abum in instrumental progressive metal world, I never though will impress me so much this album after first spin, but here it is a tru jam of an album after a couple of listnigs. Recommended for sure, pleasent, solid, tight in musicianship and original in compostions. 4 stars, unfairly underrated musician and album.

The second solo album of the brilliant Italian guitar player GIANLUCA FERRO is a little revelation for all instrumental albums lovers!This man has already released several albums with TIME MACHINE,HEART OF SUN and 24 STRINGS and has alreay a fantastic solo album in his pocket ,but this new one UNHEIMLICH is simply breathtaking!The fantastic production is another strong point for the album,because the sound is trully powerful!Crystal clear and very professional made-the album has plenty to offer to the most pretentious fans of this genre! What we have here is a massive dose of fusion metal in the vein of PLANET X-ANIMAL AS LEADERS-MESSUGAH-CHIMP SPANNER-CANVAS SOLARIS-PAUL WARDINGHAM-ON THE VIRG,among others!This Italian virtuoso has the science to deliver some fantastic technical skills that are really scarry!Having here an album of almost 70 minutes,that's quite long for an instrumental,but Gianluca Galli wanted to offer to his fans a very diverse and catchy album,passing from furious tones to more calm ones,from ultra technical measures to more laid back moments-a journey into the mind of a very talented musician,very modern and inspired!UNHEIMLICH has also a very nice and special cover,the artwork is superbe too!To sum up,this album has everything to catch the attention to all instrumental albums fans and will guarantee almost 70 minutes of guitar eargasm at 100 %!Definitelly ,there are here some serious influences from Steve Vai,John Petrucci,,Tony Macalpine or Yngwie Malmsteen-but Gianluca Ferro has his own techniquye for sure-a very spectacular and personal approach to guitar,his own sound-and that proves maturity and science to correct play on this wonderful instrument-the guitar!All our respect for an outstanding work and the final result is at the height of pour expectations for sure!4.75 STARS because perfection doesn't exist!

Taking distinct influences from the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, and John Petrucci, prolific Italian guitarist Gianluca Ferro has crafted another winner in his increasingly impressive discography. Having taken part in progressive metal bands such as Time Machine, Heart of Sun, and Arkhe (among others), Gianluca has been constantly proving his worth as a multi-faceted and talented guitarist. His latest solo album, Unheimlich, shows him in his most comfortable and confident state in his entire career. Taking his influences from the shred-metal scene and seamlessly melding it together with progressive metal and jazz fusion, Gianluca Ferro has created a one-of-a-kind prog metal album that I'd encourage all fans of instrumental music to check out. While I do have a few knocks regarding the playing time, there's more than enough great material here to satisfy me and (I would imagine) most other prog metal fans.

The music here is a mixture of progressive rock/metal, jazz fusion, shred metal, and even touches of instrumental thrash metal. Although this doesn't sound like something that's new, Gianluca Ferro manages to combine these sounds into an instrumental mix that's simultaneously enjoyable and original. One thing that impressed me more than anything else on Unheimlich was the sheer technical capabilities of Gianluca Ferro. The man can handle emotional passages like Yngwie Malmsteen, complex time signatures like John Petrucci, and shredded passages like Steve Vai, resulting in not only an impressive sound, but an overall well-rounded musician. His backing cast is equally impressive, featuring excellent musicianship in all departments. Compositionally, Unheimlich can be a bit unfocused at times, and the near-70 minute playing time doesn't help. It's simply too long, and, as a result, a bit of filler sneaks its way into the album. The best songs here are, in my opinion, the terrific "Bipolar Zombie" and the fast-paced opening "Olympia's Strangely Mechanical Actions". In terms of production, Unheimlich is also great, and boasts a terrific and professional sound.

I'm not usually a huge fan of instrumental music - many instrumental releases tend to feel like an endless noodling-fest with little musical value (for me at least). Every now and again I hear a stellar album like Unheimlich that makes me wonder why few instrumental artists can succeed as effortlessly as Gianluca Ferro has here. This isn't a perfect album, and the playing time can be a bit tedious in the end (I would've preferred it to be 15-20 minutes shorter), but it's still an excellent release well deserving of a 3.5-4 star rating. Gianluca Ferro is a fairly new name to me, but I sincerely hope to hear some more great material from him in the future! This one comes highly recommended to all fans of instrumental jazz-influenced prog metal!
