"The dark, atmospheric side of metal", does it exist? What dim, gloomy, and atmospheric bands are out there in the "prog metal" (notice quotes) world? There are so many groups labled "prog metal" on this website its hard to find the groups that are distinctively different. Many may be Dream Theater clones, straightforward Symphonic X metal, avant-garde, and/or screamo-cookie monster vocalled. Kayo Dot is an example of modern distinctiveness in "prog metal".

Where has all the spacey metal gone? Any suggestions, on this site or not?

Aahhh... you have come to the right place.  Smile

There's a growing genre that is starting to become known as "post-metal", a sort of mixture of experimental/post-rock and metal.  A few bands are at the forefront of this movement.  If you like Kayo Dot, you will probably like some of these:

Isis - Panopticon, a progressive sludge metal album, very slow songs that build like a storm to unbelievable climaxes.  the vocals are screamed, but they are in the background and really only serve as another layer on the massive soundscape.

Pelican - The Fire in Our Throats will Beckon the Thaw, instrumental post-metal.  Giant metal riffs mixed in with Explosions in the Sky-style textures and harmonies.  awesome.

Cult of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway, again more progressive sludge, a balancing act between powerful sludge and ambient-post-rock

Maudlin of the Well - Bath, if you like Kayo Dot, explore the band's roots with this fiercely experimental album.

... and there's plenty more where that came from. Wink

Yes I've heard of this "post-metal" (what a terrible name haha). When Isis began I heard their debut and that was about it, I might give them another chance. Thanks for reminding me.

Pelican I found too close to that "post-rock/experimental" genre we have here now. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm just looking for something perhaps a little bit different.

Cult of Luna, out of curiousity is a band I believe I read your review on. Unfortunately that group isn't my style Confused after hearing 4 or 5 of their songs.

And Maudlin of course, Bath is a worthy album, the one you mentioned I have heard all the way through more than once.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Perhaps there's something out there that, while related, does not quite fit in a metal/post-rock category? It is my opinion that Kayo Dot has distinguished itself among everything else mentioned yet, are there more?

Hmm well, maybe I can juggle up a few names D:

As far as albums go, I might recommend Zero Hour's The Towers of Avarice, Opeth's Blackwater Park or Still Life, Edge of Sanity's Crimson and Crimson II, Arcturus' The Sham Mirrors, Anthemon's Kadavreski and Agalloch's The Mantle or Ashes Against the Grain.

Eh, maybe you don't like growling or aggressive vocals that much, you could try one of the highly rated albums by Anathema, Katatonia or Chroma Key (although both Anathema and Katatonia started out producing grinding doom metal :p)

All referred above:

In the Woods
Anathema
Opeth
Arcturus
Katatonia

I would rather call most of these atmospheric metal...
I hate the term post-rock/metal Angry

Ok, well how about

Novembre - Materia, very atmospheric, (almost) no growling, no post-rock.  No US release either Cry

I agree with the Anathema recommendation too.

Agalloch - The Mantle
Opeth - Damnation (no death vocals here)

about as dark and gloomy as you will get with The Mantle, which is a very nice release

Trust me on this one.

Review of The Mantle from Amazon.com

"Sophomore release by Agalloch from Portland, OR. The Mantle is a grand multi-dimensional opus of 70 minutes featuring their melancholic metal with post rock and neo-folk elements. References range from Pink Floyd, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Sol Invictus, Ulver, Dissection, Fields Of The Nephilim and more. The End Records. 2002."

Dangit Opethdude!  Agalloch was going to be my suggestion! LOL  It came  immediately to mind when I saw the thread title.  Not much Doom or Goth in that band, nor Darkness really....somber is a good adjective for 'em.  Damnation is also incredible - I like "acoustic" Opeth more than most of their extensive catalogue!

Of Stone, Wind, and Pillor from Agalloch is also very good!  I haven't really absorbed the new one yet - this music, like good prog often does, takes time to absorb and realize.  I will warn that they are somewhat consistent in their mellowness, and their are no instrumental acrobatics in Agalloch..it's all about the mood and songs.

Also, hamham and aapatsos seem to refer to bands I've read about that might fit your description.  They are obviously more informed about the actual music than myself.  Embarrassed

I second the Riverside, Pelican and Isis recomendations. Also I would recommend Neurosis  ("Post - Metal" like Pelican and Isis) and 3rd and the Mortal (atmospheric doom metal, but I believe they are on this site, their earlier stuff is more metal, later on it gets less and less metal.) Hope Those Help!

Agalloch for sure. Pale Folklore and The Mantle are brilliant, and I am eagerly awaiting their new release in a couple weeks.

Isis, Pelican, Cult of Luna, Riverside, Gordian Knot (though only some of it is metal), The Gathering has some good atmospheres, though they are heading out of metal, Between the Buried and Me has some cool atmospheric breaks too.

Beyond Twilight. Progmetal doesn't get much darker and atmospheric than what this band offer.
