Plat Du Jour - St (1977)
Another one of these french threeandahalfstar (maybe even four) catchy/wacko/fun/funky/avant/zeuhlish/jazzrock-fusion oneoff-gems. No real info to be found, except for the lineup. Inclusion should be a no-brainer because someone put out their full album out on myspace. Its obviously some kind of prog, just listen for yourself. One of the worst albumcovers I've ever seen. ![]() Vincent Denis: guitar, vocals. Rodolphe Moulin: bass, vocals. Olivier Pédron: drums, percussion. Alain Potier: sax, vocals. Jacques Staub: keyboards, percussion. + Francois Ovide: percussion (3). Francois Maze: vocals (4). Is Jazzrock-fusion the most fitting genre? |

It's a very good one, and definitely worthy of inclusion. I think that the JRF team should check it.

Doubtlessly prog, but only "5 Autoroute" left any kind of positive impression on me.

^Not very generous, as usual.
Rock N Speed is awsome, isn't it? They're obviously not important or anything like that, but I think they're great fun. |

![]() They're good, but there's a reason you gave them 3.5 stars. If it helps, I really enjoyed '5 Autoroute'. |

It helps.
3.5 stars ain't too bad, though. Its ca. like the 1240 spot on my alltime hot 5000 albumlist. Right behind God Bless Tiny Tim but just ahead of More of the Monkees. |

Very good band! Not my type of music, but still very good! I find it a mix of, as you said, Avant and Jazz-Rock.

Sure, 3.5 stars is good, and so is 1240 out of 5000. But I'm spoiled ![]() |

Some of my favorite pieces of music are on extremely uneven albums.
You listen to avantgardejazz ,don't you? A three (and a half) star album can leave a strong

I should have clarified that I undertood a 3-star album as an album where all of the music is worth 3 stars, with no real standouts. I guess ECM is a good example of a label specialising in such 3-star stuff. Tzadik too, at least to a certain extent. Obviously you can have extremely uneven albums that average at 3 - 3.5 stars, but I wasn't talking about them. Such albums are definitely memorable. Plat Du Jour is largely a 3-star band with some 4-4.5 star moments, IMO. Classic Gentle Giant is a good example of a bunch of albums that are uneven, but not extremely so. |

^Of course. It would be strange (and silly) not to have an approach like that.
Sun Ra (who I love, and often play) is a five star artist with a three star discography, but he is mostly five or one star. While Jackie McLean's (who I respect, but never play) discography feels like more of a solid three. Never crap, never fantastic. I'm glad we're keeping the thread on page one, until I know someone working here notices it. Thank you, and Cacho for bothering. btw: I don't really have a top 5000 (thank God) |

I mentioned the suggestion to the JRF team soon after I posted before, and it is in discussion.

Going through the various tunes on their MySpace page, I find myself agreeing with previous comments: tunes that are jazz rock and tunes that I would be hard-pressed to label such (but maybe even meeting my idea of French punk). Again sitting on the fence: I'll go with what the majority think.

^I guess the alternatives are Jazzrock-fusion, RIO/Avant and maybe Eclectic?
I would quite certain have gone for the first option. The genre's quite inclusive with everything from Area and Herbie Hancock, to Skin Alley, Touton Macoute . |

From what I've hear (myspace) Plat Du Jour has definitely some claims to JR/F but could almost claim Avant prog, but I think Eclectic is wiser than Avant

I'm inclined to agree with you. I'd added the band to ProgFreak about nine months ago, and have added it to the Eclectic chart now and voted yes. |

Plat du Jour is cleared for Eclectic. If you want to write the bio, Christer, I can add the band for you giving you full-credit for the addition.
