These are two very traditional progressive rock bands that are inspired by the same groups of the 70's. They have a lot of the same sound (which is why I chose them in direct competition as opposed to PT or any prog metal bands). I've been a fan of SB much longer, I have almost all their stuff (whereas I only have "As The World" and "Mei" by E). I listened to "Mei" 2x today (for the first time too) and now I'm listening to "V" by SB. I have decided that SB were much more original, quirky, and interesting. The whole time I was listening to "Mei", I thought "well this is just a textbook prog rip off from old stuff". Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed it immensely and think Echolyn are a terrific band, but to me SB are just better in every way, Even after Neal left the Beard, they are still better to me.

Well "Snow" by Spock's Beard is a 2 disc concept album that still amazes me. I reviewed it for a newspaper and said it was one of the best albums ever made. If Echolyn were to make one, I doubt it'd come close. In terms of albums, get "Snow" and "V" from SB and "As The World" by E.

ECHOLYN!!!
ECHOLYN!!!
They remain more consistent regarding musical genius and management of textures and energy throught their entire discography. Both are equal in rocking power, but all the other elements (compositional inspiration, tightness in interplaying, variety in arrangements, strong handling of long compositions) find Echolyn surpassing their aforesaid fellow band.
At least, IMHO... which I guess is a minority.

I prefer Spock's Beard over Echolyn, although I do like what I have heard from Echolyn. Unfortunately, I have not heard Mei as of yet, and from what I have heard that is probably their best album.

Echolyn for me... Simply 'cos never like SB style (even when I think Snow is a good album) and Echolyn's music is closer of my personal prog tastes...

Both bands write and perform music I really dig,and I like both bands a lot.But I will pick Spock's Beard, simply because of the awesome musical talent in the band, particularly Neal Morse. Not to say that Echolyn doesn't have excellent musicians. They are all superb in their own right, particularly Paul Ramsey.who is an excellent and very overlooked prog drummer.

I like both bands really much, both have really nice things of their music, their symphonic sound is really well crafted, attractive, with a modern touch and even a latin one in Echolyn's music, so, well I think it's just like apples and oranges, and I enjoy the tutti-frutti a lot, haha.

Although I find spock's beard to be more consistent in quality (at
least in the morse years), echolyn have released two albums wich are
FAR better than anything the beard has put out (namely "Suffocating the
bloom" and "as the world"). It is almost a tie for me though I will go
for Echolyn,

That's a tough choice as I really like both bands so I wouldn't chose one over the other.

Contrary to Confused Genus, I find SB's music interesting only until Neal Morse left, and at times, the arrangements don't manage to exploit possibilities of textures and agile complexity in Morse's compositions. Their performances, on the other hand, are ballsy and precise, especially since Okumoto joined in. Meanwhile... ECHOLYN exceeds in every aspect of musical creation: inventive use of influences, proper originality, energetic performances, flawless management of contrasts and twists, capability to reinvent themselves while retaining a clear musical essence of their own.
ECHOLYN created a unique opus with "Mei": when someone says that it is ostensibly full of "old tricks" or something, I'm afraid I don't know what they are referring to. In fact, "Mei" is the perfect example of how you can create powerful progressive rock without showing off the energy, just keeping it subtle 60 % of the time and letting it go in a controlled fashion the rmaining 40 %.
I'm afraid that SB will win, and that's OK if it's what the majority wants, but the same can be said about Caravan, whose preferential position in Canterbury polls doen's keep them from being a few miles behind Matching Mole, Gilgamesh or Soft Machine. It only means that they're more accessible, or at least, less inscrutable.
Kind regards.

I haven't heard enough Echolyn to compare, but based what I've heard from them they can hold a candle to Spock's Beard. Love the Beard though !
