Progressive Biography

As my avatar indicates I am a big fan of the Canadian trio known as Rush. Originally, I did not like Rush when I was first exposed to them via Moving Pictures. It was a few years later around the time of Presto that I first heard 2112 and then I ran out and purchased Caress of Steel. I have been hooked ever since and pretty much like all eras of the band. To date, the only Rush song that I find cringeworthy is Dog Years, but noone's perfect. And Moving Pictures is most probably my favorite album of all time.

My exposure to many of the big prog bands is unusual from the standpoint that I became a fan of many of these bands as a result of their 1980's and 1990's output. I was a fan of 80's Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, and Genesis before I was a fan of their 70's output. In Genesis' case, long before. Further exploration ensued and the 70's output was discovered and some of it was even recognized from classic rock radio. I learned of bands like ELP, King Crimson, and Jethro Tull as a result of this exploration. For the most part these bands were my only exposure to progressive rock. And while I was listening and discovering these bands, I was also listening to other popular music of the 80's and early 90's, mostly hair metal bands, but also other metal and classic rock bands such as Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Queen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and Metallica. When the 80's turned to the 90's and grunge and alternative rock became all the rage, I was there right along with it. Although mostly disparaged here on PA, bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains quickly became favorite bands of mine and got regular rotations in my CD player. Not to despair however, two bands came around during this time frame that really struck a chord with me, Queensryche and Dream Theater. I think I am probably getting my timeline screwed up a bit here, but I started listening to Queensryche with the release of The Warning, which I purchased on LP. Although Operation: Mindcrime and Empires were the two album that made me a huge fan of them. With Dream Theater, of course, the song was Pull Me Under. This song blew me away from the first listen and once I purchased Images and Words, I was absolutely amazed that a band had come along that was as good and heavy as Metallica but also had a Yes/Rush sound.

Anyhow, some years passed and these bands and others continued to release new albums. New similar sounding bands like Fates Warning arrived on the scene. One thing lead to another and I just have to check out Transatlantic because of the Mike Portnoy connection. Again, I am completely blown away. I must now check out these other strangely named bands, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Marillion. All of them stunning in their own ways.

Via internet searches and a subscription to a progressive rock magazine I continued to discover much progressive rock music that I had no idea existed. Eventually, in 2007 the internet searches led me to ProgArchives and here I still am. Learning about many new bands. Providing my perspectives and opinions on various bands and artists. Trying to interject humor from time to time within the forums and making many new internet "friends".
