Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

I think any of those albums on your well-thought-out list could qualify as the first Prog-Rock album, and there's also the first albums by The Nice and Caravan too. Smile

Yes I thought of The Nice as well? but not Caravan. From Canterbury prog rock scene the very first band was the soft machine!!! ooh No jajaja the Wilde Flowers!! but  I think they were a jazzier than Soft Machine at the beginning, however the band become pure jazz-rock= Fusion.Embarrassed

The topic that won't go away.

One album that sometimes pops up as a contender is the first and only album by US band Touch from 1968. http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=7321

The canterbury bands were around before King Crimson so Caravan and Soft Machine should be mentioned for sure. However, there really is no one right answer. My personal opinion is that the Nice were probably the first real prog band but a lot of people seem to think it was KC so there is no consensus on it.

The correct answer is Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, 1959.
