I'm thinking that Genesis compromised during this 80's stylistic shift. They produced Prog pieces (whilst avoiding the, at that time, new Neo-Prog cliches of Marillion, I.Q. and Twelfth Night (among others). A very valid cross-pollination of Progressive Rock with what was cutting edge 80's sensibilities. Sure their 80's things weren't a patch on Selling England, but still engaging and interesting. I'll always prefer the 70's albums, but embrace their 80's-onward albums with respect. |
It's difficult to muster respect for songs like Illegal Alien and Invisible Touch, but I get what you mean. I actually quite like their 80's sound, and prefer it to that awful neo-prog sound, but most of the time the songs weren't there for me. Each post Duke album would have a few gems and a lot of drek.
