^ Yes, they should never have changed him for Downes, at the most have had him as a guest for the Fly from Here suite, and then perhaps Howe could have stayed in Asia too with Downes as they had been doing. And then of course they should have allowed Anderson back when he was ready. Or now they should finally do the Union thing again. Of course, that's without considering why can't they just get along anymore, but it seems clear that the band as they are can't do something memorable anymore.

The great simplification that afflicted prog was already in full swing by the late 70s, rather than the 80s.  There were some honourable exceptions in Europe (even Magma were not immune) and although they seem polar opposites both ELP and Henry Cow recorded 'final' albums in 1978 (Henry Cow's appeared in 79).  Do better in the 80s...indeed, some excellent prog musicians had to go back to day jobs during this period!

It’s interesting to come back to this poll, after not having paid attention to it for some time, and see the results. Normally I pay more attention to the comments than the poll results, but these are interesting because this is a poll where multiple votes are allowed, and usually in this instance there is not so great a distance between the options.

It would be interesting to see a follow-up poll where multiple votes were NOT allowed, and including only the options from this poll which have attracted, I don’t know, say 12 or more votes.
