Mei, The Underfall Yard and Snowtorch (Part One) are definitely good choices. But there are some others (> 15 min) of which I think immediately:
In Earnest - The Tangent El Infierno de los Buenos - Alejandro Matos August in the Urals - Deluge Grander KA III - Magma (I exclude KA II and Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré II here because these originate from earlier days). Rogue - Discipline Edited by someone_else - June 11 2013 at 05:19 |

1. Beardfish - “Sleeping in Traffic”(from Sleeping in Traffic: Part Two, 2008) - Heard it and it's ok, but far too long for its own good imo. Nothing really exciting about it either. 2. Between the Buried and Me – “Silent Flight Parliament” (from The Parallax II: Future Sequence, 2012) - Haven't heard it. 3. Big Big Train – “The Underfall Yard” (from The Underfall Yard, 2009) - Heard it, and it sounds like a couple of hundred others that I can think of. Practically Dream Theatre without the metal. 4. The Decemberists – “The Island” (from The Crane Wife, 2006) - Fantastic track, but not really an epic eh? 5. Echolyn – “Mei” (from Mei, 2002) - I guess it's alright. I need to hear it again, but I seem to remember it as being pretty good. 6. The Flower Kings – “I am the Sun—Part One” (from Space Revolver, 2000) - Zzzzzzzzzz 7. Phideaux - “Snowtorch (Part One)” (from Snowtorch, 2011) - Very nice tune, although I prefer the second part of Snowtorch. 8. The Pineapple Thief - “What Have We Sown?” (from What We Have Sown, 2006) - Without a shadow of doubt their best track to date. 9. Spock’s Beard – “The Great Nothing” (from V, 2000) - Zzzzzzzzzzz 10. Devin Townsend – “The Mighty Masturbator” (from Deconstruction, 2011) - Judging by the name alone, I should find a lot to like in this one, but I haven't yet heard it. |

I wouldn't bother with any of them

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I'm starting to enjoy Echolyn's The End is Beautiful. So far it's the only album by them that i like. Gimme a week and i'll be hooked on them.
Harvest of Souls an okay choice. The song is good, but some people say it resembles Supper's Ready too much.

Mei isn't just an epic: It's one of the greatest pieces of music ever written.
While you're at it, listen to the new singles from Echolyn: http://echolyn.bandcamp.com/ |

It is a good list. I'm sure that there are folks that are on here that could come up with at least 10 additional epics that are as good or better though, but that is the thing with lists.
![]() A couple that come to mind: Marillion - Gaza Green Carnation - Light Of Day, Day of Darkness Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape Edited by rushfan4 - June 10 2013 at 17:02 |

I quite like Anubis' "The Passing Bell." That's the only relatively recent epic track I can think of offhand at the moment that I might have added to the list... Duh! (Hit myself in the head.) And of course IQ's "Harvest of Souls."

It's a good list that does have the lesser-appreciated, yet still celebrated, songs. Decent list imo.
Cassandra Gemini is my favorite song of all time so i wish that made it though.

Popmatters has an article today entitled, "The 10 Progressive Rock Epics You Need to Hear Now." The 10: 1. Beardfish - “Sleeping in Traffic”(from Sleeping in Traffic: Part Two, 2008) 2. Between the Buried and Me – “Silent Flight Parliament” (from The Parallax II: Future Sequence, 2012) 3. Big Big Train – “The Underfall Yard” (from The Underfall Yard, 2009) 4. The Decemberists – “The Island” (from The Crane Wife, 2006) 5. Echolyn – “Mei” (from Mei, 2002) 6. The Flower Kings – “I am the Sun—Part One” (from Space Revolver, 2000) 7. Phideaux - “Snowtorch (Part One)” (from Snowtorch, 2011) 8. The Pineapple Thief - “What Have We Sown?” (from What We Have Sown, 2006) 9. Spock’s Beard – “The Great Nothing” (from V, 2000) 10. Devin Townsend – “The Mighty Masturbator” (from Deconstruction, 2011) The author writes that "newer gems like Porcupine Tree’s Anesthetize, Dream Theater’s Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, and the Mars Volta’s Cassandra Gemini are surely at the forefront of every prog lover’s consciousness," but that there "are plenty of other relatively recent epics that are either underappreciated or under the radar," including his list of 10. Do you agree with this list? What would your list look like? |
