Topic: neo prog - yummy or not yummy? Posted: December 04 2005 at 17:04 |
I'vebeen thinking about this issue since this poll started, and I found how much my perspective has changed.
I used to find Neo Prog too bland and commercially oriented, but after the invention of Prog Related, things have changed, at least Neo Propg is Progressive Rock, may be simmpler han Symphonic, but it's part of the genre.
Still not my favorite sub-genre but at least I have to accept they belong here, something I can't say about many other bands from the Pandora Box named Prog Related.

I voted Yummy, but I think the original prog greats are way better....(Genesis, Yes, GG, Jethro Tull)

- Gerard: Also Japanese band from the 21st Century, closer to Art Rock than to Neo Prog but with a jazzy touch. Even if some people consider Neo, they are not remotely representative of the sub-genre because too poppy.
- Romantic Warrior: Hey, isn't this the name of a Return to Forever album? if it is, the band is clearly and 100% Fusion. If you are talking about the band Romantic Warrior, it's New Age
- Trespass (Israel): Is a band from Israel clearly influenced by ELO, not Neo Prog either, closer to Symphonic, good band though, their album In Haze of Time has been largely reviewed here. If you're talking about Trespass (Germany), they are also Symphonic with a touch of Grobschnitt, would be very unusual to find 43 minute tracks in Neo Prog.
- Tocatta: Never heard about them, even checked Allmusic and doesn't appear even there.
- Empire: A 100% Italian Symphonic band from the 90's.
So I will also haveto disagree with you Andrew, none of this bands except maybe Glass Hammer and Tocatta (Because I heven't heard them), are Neo Prog, I'll go with Stonebeard this time.

Can't get your point Andrew:
- I said none of the bands you mention is Neo Prog, except maybe Glass Hammer (Which I also know and have reviewed, and still ot sure if they are Neo), Romantic Warriors (Which is also a New Age band) and Toccata (The last two I didn't knew)
- I think I proved that first point
- I described each and every one, so I'm not guessing as you say, I already wrote reviews about 4 of them
- I never said they were bad, most are great.
BTW: The Italian Romantic Warriors is a JAZZ FUSION BAND according to their own semi official site:
From: Mark Fonda <> Romantic Warriors - 'Battlefield' (Italy 1993): Romantic Warriors are the reincarnation of the 70's Italian jazz-rock group "Arti E Mestieri" featuring keyboard great Beppe Crovella and drummer Furio Chirico along with several guest performers. Crovella had been manager for such notable Italian prog groups as "Calliope", "Syndone" and "Il Castello Di Atlante" before taking this symphonic rock trip down memory lane. Armed to the hilt with a battery of keyboards, he recreates the glorious sounds of the 70's with a strong keyboard emphasis... Hammond, Moog, Mellotron, Arp, Yamaha, Roland, Proteus, Emu - you name it. There are some vocals which are in English and are perhaps the only weak point. The 12-track album is mostly pure instrumentals which are truly impressive. The packaging is a beautiful triple-foldout digipak with medieval warriors in armor on their steeds and carrying instruments instead of lances. No website is currently available.

But I agree, most are good.

IMHO, yummy or not yummy, Neo Progressive music has been dreadful called as “Neo” thing provoking this debate. The Neo-Progressive word is just a euphemism crafted by “truly symphonic progressive” 70’s ears, trying to catalog this sub-genre into some kind of inferior level (or “ghetto”). What happen if hereafter we call this music “Post Symphonic Progressive” or something? Dilemma solved… Like it or not, it’s only matter of taste. BTW: a) Marillion isn’t the only band of this sub-genre, and b) if they are "the premier band of the genre" it depends… as "premier band" possibly... but the first record Neo Progressive created was “And Then There Were Three...” (1978) by the “truly symphonic progressive” band Genesis…

There is yummy neo-prog and un-yummy neo prog. Some neo-prog is the denial of yumminess in itself, some if the personification of yummyhood.
Most neo prog that I like is '80's neo-prog, BTW. I see a progressive decline every next decade.

I only disagree in a tiny little point: Marillion is not "almost" good, it is "good" indeed. besides, they kept prog alive almost single-handedly in the '80's (OK, there are also King Crimson and some German bands...) so they deserve a "salute" at least for the Fish era. For Hoghart era: I even can't stand the longer numbers, which were scarce in Fish era...
I could go for some neo-prog recordings in the time of "despair", but there a re hell lot of remnants from the good old '70's, so I wouldn't bother... (I just saw marillion's fugazi album without a sleeve in a second-hand shop, and it was only 1 new Turkish liras (about $0.85!!!) and got it. FYI, other recors I bought were Tangerine dream's rubycon and stratosfear, J. Michel Jarre's Oxygene, Tubular Bells (1), klaus Schulze's Timewind, and Yes' Fragile and Yesterdays. I paid an average of 15 Liras ($12) for each, and I don't regret for a single penny! btw, I got all but Yesterdays in mp3 discs...)
I agree, stebo32... not yummy (so I voted). Gummy bears are more yummy, indeed And so is the lady in your signature (don't anyone tell my wife !!!)

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret: Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

Too ghetto????
WTF?????

 That's hilarious ... I can think of
many things to say about neo-prog ... most of them not complimentary
... but too ghetto ... not in a million years!
BTW, stebo, if you ever have the chance why don't you try IQ's Dark
Matter? it's the only non Marillion/Fish neo-prog album I enjoy ...
Too ghetto indeed
