I'd agree to that.  Well, here's a response to your female co-worker:  Why need to go to or envy being with a utterly conventional, pop-poisoned, mindless society ruled according to the whims of herd mentality when you can have a more interesting one right here composed of people who actually read and think?  Of course, when she says "socially-retarded" she is actually praising us in return; at least it makes us aware of how good our musical tastes are and how disgustingly bad theirs.

Really The Mars Volta and Ummagumma are too much.

If chromaticism played some more accessible things he could receive better definition of progressive rock from that lady.

As I said in other thread, try some Robert Wyatt or some Sigur rós. More soft aproach, and a more close style..

You are not a rare specimen. Those who starts threads like this one are just not looking "prog-girls" (?) in the right place. Most of my friends (many girls in that cathegory) are related to arts in one way or another, and weird music is always passing by.

Much more strange phenomenon to investigate: I'm an heterosexual man. therefore, I have a penis. But the idea of watching another penis makes me sick. I'n not an homofobic or anything like that, it's just that this penis paradox is very misterious to me. I mean, if I already have one, ¿why it bothers me so much to even think about the sight of another?...

No. At least, not in a literally sense. Now, if you think about all those sexually explicit references that are allways floating around (TV comercials and stuff), maybe I was "culturally abused". But that's another issue. Perhaps I'm a bit homofobic, though I don't hate homosexuality (I have a few homosexual friends, and their sexuality is never an issue).

Starette, why not just feel "gebauchpinselt" (an untranslatable German word that literally means "having the belly tickled with a fine brush"; an expression for experiencing pleasure from praise) from all the attention we get from the boys?

Actually, Jean is right!!

most of the progheads I know of are actually sad that there are no more women  into our beloved genre - Most  of the threads developped in the forum regarding women is denouncing the fact that there are too few of them around us.

You just pulled two or three were there are some very stupid response (and not just coming from virgin teenagers who have yet to find out about how great women are)

in other words (and even if I have a long standing girlfriend):

We want more women to like prog!!!!

If it's some relief then I'm proud to say my wife's into prog.  I successfully introduced her to the genre with Dream Theater's Images and Words, where she liked the songwriting (being a journalist and a writer, she is very critical regarding literary works, same thing with lyrics).  What's more impressive is that she is a nonmusician yet has good musical taste.  Ever since then she'd listen to DT, Yes or Tull (Thick as a Brick) from time to time (though the samples in DT's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence seem to spook her so she only listens to it with me).

 

Another interesting fact from where I come from (Philippines) is that among the rare prog musicians from my nation, the leading prog metal band is fronted by a female (http://www.fuseboxx.com).

I... I think that music helped me while trying to reach my actual girlfriend's atention. I don't have a great voice (or even an listenable one).
