I don't know what "Alt-Rock" is supposed to sound like, or "Crossover", but I don't really hear punk in the mix.
Hard Rock to me is Led Zep, Deep Purple et al - and I don't hear that.
...and I definitely don't hear Prog Rock either

^ the entire spectrum of metal is broad and alternative metal is even more vague and ill defined, so it is purely a matter of personal opinion as to whether SoaD are metal or not. I still maintain that (with Mezmerise/Hypnotise) they are closer to hard rock than metal. However, whichever they are is completely immaterial, they not be prog.
(I have heard the debut album, but not Toxicity)

^ their songs are interesting mixes of various genres ... metal being a main ingredient. I can understand if people coming from different genres and not too familiar with metal don't view them as a metal band, they're also rooted in Alt-Rock/Punk/Crossover.

Not metal????
Have you heard the first two albums?
Chop Suey is a partially thrash-based chunk of pure manic metal to my ears - hard rock (in my book) doesn't have that metallic edge or use thrash.

Agreed, could be progressive is not enough. For what they are attempting to do they should be progressive, but they just aren't progressing themselves or their music. However, I must admit I've warmed to them slightly since seeing them at Download, but I cannot even accept that they are metal - they are just hard rock. (Doesn't Malakian sing on Question!?)

Sorry but the only SOAD's song I like is Toxicity (I even knwo how to play it on bass...but it isn't too difficult in fact ). For me it's too heavy kind of music, something completely out of prog-rock context . But I don't like progressive metal too, so probably I'm not the best person to rate them. |

Their Bungle influence don't make'em prog. They have some prog, experimental or even avant moments, but that not enough IMO.

I agree that they're not prog ... but there's hardly anything "typical" about them - they're the most "atypical" metal band I know. |

While I don't think they should be added, I don't believe that they should be completely written off either. System right now stands on a threshold between Prog Metal, and Thrash Metal, while most of their stuff hint's towards Thrash, they do have a few bluesy Jazzy pieces, not to mention Vicinity of Obscenity sounds alot like say hmm Mr. Bungle, I am very much looking forward to their next album (If it happens of Course) to see where they take their sound.

I think they could fit in nicely with prog related, I mean they're not over the top prog, but they are very creative and experiment alot with different timbres, structures, tempo changes...
Their guitarist got the sound he wanted for their last two albums by sticking acoustic guitars on a wall, pointing his guitar amp at them and miking them up!! If I were to personally categorise them as prog related Art Metal. People seem too concerned with setting a genre that is meant to be about breaking genres. It's progressive rock! The name itself is extremely ambiguous, people are trying to define something that shouldn't necessarily be defined. Even though this topic has been done to death, I like that there a poll has been made, even though the results don't further what I believe in. Edited by tremulant - May 28 2007 at 06:31 |
