 Topic: Funk Poll #2: Jeff Beck VS Hancock

Death Wish is a great idea to get. Particularly as Jeff Beck (in the Yardbirds) is on it as well.
But Head hunters is a great jazz funk album while Blow By Blow is a great jazz rock album. Always felt he should have done Superstition on Blow By Blow as that song needs a light touch (not something one got from BBA.)
Probably go for Blow By Blow as his guitar playing is just superb and I love instrumental rock being given a chance. His other Steveie Wonder cover ('Cause We've Ended) is done to perfection.

Well I picked Head Hunters......I am a big funk listener. I just find that BbB does not have the funk qualities I really enjoy. Herbie will always make my funk cup runneth over!

^Yeah, I do have Man-Child, and it's fantastic. Secrets is a bit too light for me, but still not disco or simple, just not really great in comparison of its three predecessors.
Hancock's is indeed more diverse, and surely more progressive in the sense that Herbie since the 60s has been incorporating jazz to new forms, electronic, funk, disco, hip-hop and what-not. Still, Jeff is a great guitarist and definitely a fan of fusion by what I know, playing Cobham and Mahavishnu stuff live, I think he just wished he had done some kind of fusion like them but never really did.
As for the Mwandishi, it's definitely Hancock's creative peak, inspired by Davis' most experimental works, Hancock gave a unique twist to them and evolved from there. Today I listened to 'Sleeping Giants' from Crossings, it's amazing.

nice, ive personally been throwing on lots of James Brown funk lately, and Lettuce. Great band. As far as the poll, my vote also goes to HH, mainly because i dont listen to Jeff Beck as much as I used to, whereas Herbie comes up every now and then. I still have to re-evaluate his Mwandishi albums, and I have some of his 60s albums like Takin' Off and Empyrean Isles for example, but i feel Hancock's discography is more varied than Beck's. btw, if anyone is a fan of Headhunters and Thrust, you have to get Man-Child. It's more focused (tighter/shorter compositions) but just as funky and actually features some guitar. Also Secrets (which came out after Man-Child) is also essential Herbie Funk. And for a live album, Flood is also essential, and features live cuts from Head Hunters, Thrust, and Man-Child Those 5 albums MUST be heard to fully appreciate his funky era. After Secrets, his albums get sketchy, mixing smoother funk-jazz with vocoder vocals, though there is good stuff mixed in if you're willing to sift through everything else. Going through his later 70s/early 80s albums (before his electro-funk albums) i did discover a really good album, as good as his early-mid 70s work. Mr. Hands (1980). It's easily his best album since Man-Child and actually has the Head Hunters lineup on a couple tracks, as well as Jaco Pastorious guesting. Like i said, i need to re-listen to the Mwandishi albums, it's been a looooog time since i listened to any of those. **EDIT** - this thread has inspired me to listen to Sextant, as I remember being the most familiar with that Mwandishi album than the other 2. Wow, Rain Dance

Well it's this and that, but I'd go for Herbie's album, though Blow By Blow is not too shabby. I prefer either Thrust or Man-Child over Head Hunters, however...

Yeah, that's what I thought, from what I know from you, you definitely are more inclined towards the more experimental style of Hancock.
I, for one, tend towards the more groovy Hancock, but do appreciate much of Mwandishi in small doses, especially Crossings.

I like Thrust and Death Wish more than Head Hunters. Head Hunters doesn't do that much for me at this time. I like his Mwandishi trilogy (Mwandishi, Crossings, Sextant) the most as well, but I also love his earlier albums such as Maiden Voyage (1965) and Empyrean Isles (1964).

I still need to get Death Wish, and actually now I'd say that Man-Child is my fave funk-Hancock album.
And yes, his jazz stuff is excellent.

As a guitarist, I like Blow by Blow the better of the two (how could I not?), but Headhunters simply gets more of the funk out, so I voted for that one.
