Imo Number 7 is every bit as good as Doomsday and Snowtorch. All masterpieces in my book; you definitely need to hear it if you liked the other two.

Phideaux mentioned they lost the deadline for pressing the CDs, so it may take a wile. However, you can listen to the whole thing on his website. |

I'm going to go against the grain.
Snowtorch is good, a wonderful tribute to prog. But something that made Doomsday approach masterpiece level isn't here for me. I went back to listen to Doomsday again and immediately knew. I've listened to Snowtorch 10-12 times, and it still will almost certainly be on my year end list.
still very good.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

After another week of intensive listening I'm starting to think Snowtorch may actually be a masterpiece. I just can't seem to get enough of it. It's not absolutely perfect, but I thin it's at least a 4.50 star album rounded up to 5.

After a week of intensive listening, I agree that Snowtorch is an excellent album. I'm happy to see the album gets a lot of attention and praise (100 ratings with an average of 4.50, whoa!). However, not to take anything away from the album, I don't think it's the masterpiece people are claiming it to be. It's definitely a solid 4-4.50 star album, but not the kind of a masterpiece Doomsday Afternoon is in my opinion. But, as I said, Snowtorch is indeed an excellent album and perhaps it will even grow on me with time.
Not to criticise, but I have one small gripe with the album and that is the beginning of part two. It's good music, but the way it fades out makes me feel like it doesn't contribute anything to the rest of the song. But if my only complain about the album is something like that, it tells something about the quality of the album. |

I'm now on my second listen. It is exceptionally good, and, at the moment, most definitely bordering on the masterpiece status.
I will, however, hold fire on the review until a few more listens, because I do find that a rushed review is generally a bad review. Somehow, though, I seriously doubt very much that my initial opinion will be changed that much. Thanks for sending the link Phideaux - I really am most grateful

Hi.
I like "Snowtorch". I listened to it 3 times in last 3 days and it progress in my mind after each of listenings. I think this album is the proggest Phideaux album. Snowtorch can categorize as Eclectic album (IMO) but I cant found the atmospher of "Doomsday Afternoon" and "Number 7" in it . I mean "Snowtorch" impress me by different way. In this time I like "Doomsday...." and "Number 7" more than "Snowtorch" but I dont know what happen after more listening. Thanks.

Sondresae,
Thanks for the kind words. No worries to write a review, but I'm glad you like the album. Probably best to ensure you do your english assigments to the best!!! ;-) Anyway, we appreciate the comment. |

Snowtorch... What a masterpiece!
![]() I love this album, and I personally think it's among the best albums I've ever heard! I love it so much that I even recommended it on my bandcamp, along with "Doomsday Afternoon". I'll write a review here on PA of it soon, just need to get done with some english assignments first...

I think you can hear the full thing on bandcamp. We have some free tracks for download online (and I can slip you a free .wav file of the full album because when we remastered it, we provided folks with a free lossless download).
From what I understand it is a bit of a let down from Doom and possibly might have been needed as the next stepping stone to Snort Hog. However, I really love the long song Waiting For The Axe (but it takes a long time to start). The keyboards are as manic and crazy as some of the stuff in the new album. Probably the tracks in the middle have put people off. I realize now it's an album of transitions with maybe one or two actual songs. The emphasis was definitely on texture, sound, mood and flow. You sort of have to "get on the ride" and stay on for it to make sense. The last piece written and recorded for the album was Love Theme From Number Seven/Storia Senti which is probably the most like Snowtorch. Let me know if you'd like links to the .wav download. p.s. some people thought it was an improvement on Doom, but most did not. |

I will have to hear Number 7 now. I wonder if its sandwiched between 2 masterpieces and therefore is a let down - it happens often you know

Damn, that's a lot of time you'll be surrendering to us!!! And we thank you! I'm so glad you have become possessed! To be honest, I really love the sort of albums that I need to immediately play again once they are over. We sort of did make it seem like one should do this with the subliminal 4th track which seems to suggest "The story begins again..." |

Had the album for three days and am having difficulty imagining life without it. I can honestly say that this is one of the most holistically satisfying modern prog releases I've ever experienced. I listen to lots and lots and LOTS of music and am generally liberal in listening to new releases; maybe once every other day until it sinks into my skin and soul. But I've finished Snowtorch and started it up again immediately...numerous times. I'm really moved, I'm really impressed, and I'm genuinely looking forward to delving into the rest of your discography. In short: Kudos in the extreme. I'll be featuring part uno as the closing number on the next episode of Radio Obscura.

I've been listening to this a lot in the last week.
One thing I notice with the last three releases by Phideaux, is the addictive nature of these albums for me. I can't seem to get enough of it; one listen isn't enough and it warrants another and another... It was the same for Doomsday Afternoon and Number Seven and it's repeating itself with Snowtorch. This is music I just want to keep on listening to constantly. Another wonderful achievement (to my ears at least). I've already posted about the new album in my blog (pretty much just to spread the word of the original message by Phideaux about the album being on Bandcamp), but I'll do a proper post dedicated to it later on as well (like I do with other albums). |

Hahaha, I don't know about that. He's contributed several reviews and seems to have opinions about music. I can only assume he's listened to the album and concluded that it is not his cup of tea. And he obviously has some pretty good taste because he rates Godbluff at 5 stars (which is COMPLETELY TRUE, btw!!!). I'm only sorry he didn't like the album and even liked it less the second time he heard it (or it might have been several times later). It's interesting, though, because many people have said to me that our new album Snowtorch has a TINY quality like that era of Van der graaf Generator. I would think someone who liked Godbluff might enjoy Snort Hog. But, maybe that's the beef -- that he thinks we're trying to copy that Vdgg sound too much. |
