A Change Of Seasons has lost some magic over the past few years, I must say. I remember listening to that song, consistently throughout the whole 20 minute bus ride for like a whole month in grade 8 - This is when I was just getting into Dream Theater, and well I guess Prog too. This was my first time where I had heard something of that caliber in size and musicianship - I was just awed. Nowadays though, Six Degrees probably hold the candle. I really like the diversity in that song. Thumbs Up

Yes, Mindcrime is a masterpiece of 80s metal, but (like another user said) the other works are quite mediocre and I consider it the only Queensryche album that deserves multiple listens.

^ agreed. That would be just awkward. Also I gotta say that I love DT's WDADU just as much as the next prog head out there, but that album doesnt even come close to the sheer mastery of QUEENSRŸCHE's OPERATION MINDCRIME. that album is the best album of the entire 80's era. I mean DT were just starting out, but I stil say it's an absolutey solid debut album. On the other hand, QUEENSRŸCHE hit thier talent peak with MINDCRIME. They never did better than that album. That was it!!

^ Honestly, I can't figure out why he acts like this. As far as I know, his departure from DT was caused by a musical divergence, not for some sort of fights within the members of the group, so I don't see any particular reason to avoid collaborations or one-night-reunions like the one they did with dominici and sherinian.

With such bad works, remastering is not enough...
That's why "When Dream and Day Reunite" is the answer - sound quality is good, Rudess plays on it, Labrie sings on it, and they even jam out during some of the tunes.

Hmmm...sounds worth a listen

Don't forget Charlie Dominici and Derek Sherinian coming out to play with the band on Metropolis Part I.
Yeah, that part is quite awesome. I hope there will be occasions like that even with moore and portnoy.

I recall Moore stating something about not wanting to do anything with Dream Theater again. The closest thing he did with DT was probably OSI's debut, which had Portnoy as a guest.
I consider drone metal to be progressive...

LOL Although, to be honest, I've been a Dream Theater fan for like 7 years before I became a TFK fan.
ah, okay, so it's the DT dudes who took over the TFK threadWink
i'm at systematic chaos at this point.  i was gonna start at the beginning, but i really like jordan rudess.  i've liked everything so far...except some of the hot mastering.  like tfk, it takes a while to get into some of their tunes for me...especially the really metal tunes.
Start from the beginning, you won't regret!

When Dream and Day Unite?        Or do you mean the Majesty Demos?

At least get When Dream and Day Reunite with James on vocals. Awesome show.

When Dream and Day Unite is the best 80s progressive metal album ever released. It is just recorded by a drunk monkey.

I thought Operation: Mindcrime was the best 80s prog metal album? Even still, I'd take Perfect Symmetry over WDADU. The Charlie vocals kill it for me, not the songs themselves.

Well ok, it's a great album, with a lot of gems and cool ideas, but I&W is on another level, definitely.. I wouldn't talk about overshadowing..

I don't feel that. the WDADU recordings (most of them) were off of Portnoy's sh*tty A-Track recordings. It's very interesting though. I'll give ya that, but it's something you cannot crank and really enjoy. :(

That's a great performance, but how has been already said, Dominici's voice fits better in those songs, and Kevin Moore's awesome key lines are ofter "ruined" by Rudess. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Rudess' playing, but here he just moves away from that 80s sound and arrangement approach that I love in When Dream and Day Unite.

Even though I'm not a great fan of LaBrie's singing, I thought that vocals could only improve on this version of the album... however, indeed Dominici's voice fits better the songs. At first, i didn't really like Dominici's singing, and to hear him though the whole album was a tiresome affair, however the most disapointing aspect of the re-recording was LaBrie's voice. Moore's keyboards were also better suited for the album, and were something special... I don't think Rudess did a bad job himself, it's just that it lost some of the magic. However, where the re-recorded album wins is on heaviness and energy and quality of recording. So, indeed both versions have their pros and cons.

Obvious choices would be either ACOS or 6DOIT.

That said, The Great Debate is one of my favourites, maybe because I'm involved in medical science/research.

The album is incredibly 80's material. Just has that vintage 80's sound that I still to this day, adore. Do enjoy this album. It was a great first effort, but a far cry from their second which is a beast!!!

Original copy is better. Dominici singing is a much better fit because of the style of the songs, although I have to admit LaBRie does rock ' A MATTER OF TIME' though. Also Kevin Moore on keys is the best. Live Rudess, but Moore is my favourite.
