I'm looking for recommendations for a few good online retailers so I can
get a few of the harder to find CDs. I won't mention what they are, for
fear of being accused of soliciting trading andhaving this post deleted,
but suffice to say what I am looking for is obscure prog recordings from
"the good old days".

Anybody have any suggestions? BTW, I have hit the sponsors of this and
other well-known prog sites and have not found what I am looking for.

Thanks

Artist Shop in the USA and on line, has a lot of reissues, specialising in independent labels and non-USA based labels:

If you are into jazz fusion of all sorts including Indo jazz, I strongly recommend US-based Abstractlogix also on the web:

http://www.abstractlogix.com/

If you want to look further afield, Ultima Thule in the UK has a nice line in obscurities:

Thanks, unfortunately none of these have what I'm looking for but I know
I will become a regular to all these sites.

Any others?

I assume you're talking about bootlegs. You should check out the torrent site Dimeadozen - http://www.dimeadozen.org/. Only live recordings, no illegal boots or recordings of bands that ban such things. I've found some amazing stuff there - everything from Dream Theater to Magma to really obscure stuff like Debile Menthol, Anglagard, etc.

If you're actually looking for official releases, I can vouch for all of these online stores:

Syn-Phonic: http://synphonic.8m.com/ - largest selection, ridiculously fast shipping, prices may be slightly higher than elsewhere but not by much

Wayside Music: http://www.waysidemusic.com/ - best selection for avant-prog fans, great service.

The Laser's Edge: http://www.lasercd.com/ - best selection for prog-metal fans.

Doug Larson Imports: http://www.hicom.net/~dlarson/ - great selection of obscure prog from other countries, both classic and modern

Big Balloon Music: http://www.bigballoonmusic.com/ - smaller selection but sometimes has the best prices

Progreviews has the best list. But out of that list I believe The Laser's Edge is your best bet, with Wayside coming in second. Both sites will give good and fair descriptions of the artist, their sound, and/or a general decription of the album. This is a great help in deciding to buy an album by a group you've never heard of. That is the plus side to both these on-line stores. And as Progreviews also said, Laser's is strickly prog and prog/metal. Wayside includes avante-garde, psychedelia, jazz, and prog, and sometimes some classic rock rare items. And forget about using dimeadozen. If you are not a member and do not have an account already established you are out of lucky. They already have 100,000 members which is their maximum.

Note on Dimeadozen, they regularly purge inactive members so getting in is no problem if you keep trying every once in a while.

The ones I tend to use most these days -- apart from Marketplace sellers on Amazon US and Amazon UK -- are BTF www.btf.it which is excellent, and GEMM www.gemm.com for the really hard to find stuff.

I've bought a lot of stuff from Music Stack, which links thousands of record shops together. That's if you want to get it legally of course!
