Progressive Biography

Date of birth: 1956

I was first introduced to progressive rock in 1972 by listening to EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER, YES, PINK FLOYD and JETHRO TULL amongst others. My musical tastes are catholic, and progressive rock is only one of the many types of music that I like.

During the 1970s I spent a lot of time with friends listening to, enjoying and avidly discussing progressive rock. Albums were eagerly purchased or borrowed as they were released. My interest in the genre waned from the mid to late 1970s as the style of the music changed. Although family and career took centre stage in the 1980s and 1990s, I still listened on occasion to some of my old albums, but only started to get seriously interested in progressive rock again in the late 1990s and began the task of replacing with CDs my musicassettes and LPs (the latter long since sold or given away), as well as buying CDs of the albums that I never got round to owning the first time round. Had it not been for the Internet I would not have persevered with this.

Recently I have been hankering to hear progressive rock (actually, good rock music of any kind) from different and/or new bands - Italian progressive rock bands I had not heard previously, for example - and my search led me to this excellent Web site, which is a font of information.

Collection of original progressive albums:
I am not really a collector of progressive rock albums in the strict sense of the word, as I do not collect for completeness and only tend to buy and retain albums I really like listening to. I currently have only circa 70 progressive rock albums, although I do listen to friends' progressive rock albums occasionally.

My favourite progressive bands/artists (in alphabetical order):

My favourite progressive albums include (in alphabetical order):
"Atom Heart Mother" (PINK FLOYD); "Darwin!" (BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO); "Illusions On A Double Dimple" (TRIUMVIRAT); "Forse Le Lucciole Non Si Amano Più" (LOCANDA DELLE FATE); "Foxtrot" (GENESIS); "Fragile" (YES); "Greenslade" (GREENSLADE); "Pawn Hearts" (VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR); "Photos of Ghosts" (PFM); "Tarkus" (ELP); "The Story of i" (PATRICK MORAZ).

Other comments:
My fellow collaborators and some forum members on this site are extremely knowledgeable on the subject of progressive rock, and I can only aspire to such knowledge.

I'm interested in structure, harmony, melody, tempo, rhythm, instruments and so on. I hope you'll indulge me, as I know that not everyone may have the same interest. However, I do also 'listen' with my heart, and in some of my reviews mention the pictures that the music conjures up in my mind, or the feelings it evokes, or describe other musical styles or pieces of which I am reminded.

I suppose I gravitate towards melodic symphonic progressive rock using plenty of keyboards, although the above list of albums hopefully shows that I do not like exclusively that type of progressive rock.

In December 2006 I discovered that someone on another Web site had been plagiarising my reviews during 2006, even adding "a.k.a. Fitzcarraldo" to his user name on some of the reviews he stole. If you come across any reviews on other Web sites that are copies of mine here but do not credit this Web site then please use the Prog Archives forums to send me a Private Message. Thanks.
