Topic: I find it interesting... Posted: February 09 2006 at 18:42 |
I started listening to regular jazz before jazz fusion. I listen
to both now. I'm really liking Masques by Brand X right now
(bought it on vinyl for several dollars). It's so shiny, and
colourful shiny too. You can see the whole spectrum of colours
shine from the surface.

I'm just getting into some jazz, and right now I enjoy Pat Metheny's work. I think overall I'll be more into fusion, though.

I am absolutely ecstatic about:
Miles Davis (especially the Shorter>Hancock>Carter>Williams quintet)
Charles Mingus (all)
Thelonious Monk (my favorite pianist in any genre)
John Coltrane (all)
Eric Dolphy
Lenny Breau (tragically under-recorded guitar master)
Wes Montgomery
And I also like: Sonny Rollins, John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Sonny Sharrock, Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, McCoy Tyner, Ornette Coleman, Keith Jarrett, Ralph Towner, to name all I can think of right now.
And lets not forget my favorite drummers Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, and Tony Williams

So much music. So little time.

You like "A Love Supreme" and "My Favorite Things," and yet you consider Mingus too experimental? You're a weird one . I definitely recommend checking out the "Mingus Ah Um" album, however. Absolutely amazing songwriting, and nothing too far out. "Better Git It In Your Soul" and "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" are absolute classics.

I like some big band jazz like Earl Hines, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington.
I adore Miles Davis' 'Kind of blue'
Charles Mingus is a bit to much experimental for my taste nonetheless I like him
John Coltrane is a pivotal artist in the story of jazz and I like 'my favorite things' and 'love supreme'
Dave Brubeck quartet's 'time out'
I absolutely love the jazz crusaders
I also like some vocal jazz artists like Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday

Then how is it that pretty much every single jazz saxophonist that came after him is directly or indirectly influenced by him? In terms of groundbreaking influence, Parker did for the jazz and the sax what Hendrix did for rock and the electric guitar. The difference is that, unlike Hendrix, Parker still has a better technique than all the saxophonists that came after him!

I appreciate jazz, but I dont really listen to it regularly. I find it more intriguing to me with the rock element attached.

I've recently been getting into regular jazz, but I still think most
fusion is better. I really like John Coltrane (especially A Love
Supreme, Giant Steps, and Interstellar Space) and some early Miles
Davis.
This October, I got a chance to go see Sonny Rollins in concert at U of
M. Pat Metheny was there a week later, but that's when our homecoming
dance was, so I couldn't go.

That a lot of people in this message board listen to a lot of jazz fusion/prog rock bands like Brand X, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Hatfield and the North, and the like, but most of those people don't listen to more traditional or straight ahead jazz or stuff that doesn't have a heavy electric element (and there are exceptions, so don't start going into a rage or anything, but it is true that most people here who listen to fusion don't listen to jazz). So, for those of us who do like jazz, what are your favorites?
I love Charles Mingus (probably my favorite jazz composer), John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Michael Brecker, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, and, on the electric side but not quite all-out heavy fusion, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny (I would consider him, if not the best electric guitarist ever, then at least in the top 3).
