Topic: Is Pink Floyd overrated?? Posted: April 18 2006 at 20:19 |
I have a hate/love relationship with Pink Floyd... Some of their albums -specially early 70's- are great but others are totally bored (in my opinion)... I don't know what u think, but albums like Saucerful of Secrets, Meddle, The Wall, Final Cut or Division Bell are full of meaningless guitar solos, poor lyrics, and songs without sense and emotion... Pink Floyd fans gonna kill me for that topic but I really want to know what you think about this band cos I really believe that many Pink Floyd albums are totally overrated...

Saucerful of secrets is an early 70's album isn't it. I can agree with Division Bell. I don't understand the rest of your post. Since when is it that a great guitar solo has to have meaning? I'm not too much into lyrics but i do think that PF's songs on the Wall are emotionial. If you don't like the emotions being conveyed here that's another thing.
I see that you like Steve Hillage. I like him too but as for emotion i would not rate his work too highly. That doesn't matter because hillage's work isn't particularly about emotion as far as i'm concerned. More about atmosphere and great musicianship really. It's the same with Floyd , not everything has to have loads of emotional meaning, there are other things that are also important in writing good songs.

Yeah, and if I remember correctly there is exactly 1 guitar solo on The Final Cut. I disagree on practically everything else on the original post too. This time I don't even bother to be more precise.

just kidding. I agree that every one of those albums *with the exception of Meddle....mmmm.....Echoes....* is pretty much overrated. Although The Wall has one or two memorable solos....and i do mean only one or two.

They have two overrated albums: Dark Side and The Wall. That's it. Lots of their stuff is IMO underrated, such as Saucerful Of Secrets, Ummagumma, Meddle, and Atom Heart Mother are IMO perfect five star masterpieces.

Overrated/Underrated are meaningless words used to describe subjective tastes.

So you don't like Floyd so they're automatically overrated?

I like Pink Floyd that said I think what lifts Floyd`s rating is their ability to capture not only a prog Audience but also how they manage to impress everyday music fans . I don`t consider Pink Floyd 100 % prog (eg hardly any complex time signatures and pretty straight forward playing) but that doesn`t discourage me from seeing them as very high quality music . For this reason I feel Pink Floyd are not underrated , in fact Floyd are the ingredient most good prog bands need.

I hated Dark Side Of The Moon the first time I listened to it, despite all the rave reviews, adulations, and "music from the gods" claims. All my friends thought I was nuts. Was there something I was missing? I just didn't get it. It was too blusey, pop-like, a sax solo? and even wailing backup chick singers?! What is this tripe I thought. It was definitely not the experimental, psychedelic PF from Obscured By Clouds, Umma Gumma, or Live At Pompei. I cringed everytime I heard Money on the radio. Ok, so maybe the band had moved on and I didn't. And boy was I proven wrong, even today one of the most popular rock albums to date.
At the risk of giving away my age a little here, I'm talking about the vinyl lp version. What the hell, I thought. in the very least it's a great sound effects album for Halloween with a great cover and posters. So I shelved it. As I did with Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall was definitely no Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. (Yes, I know, at this point all the PF fans out there are probably throwing rocket launchers and dirty bombs at me too).
But this bothered me that I'd reacted this way. Of course I still like them, one of my favorite bands. The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, is still on my top ten list. I just couldn't put PF and Dark Side Of The Moon (and the rest) in the Prog section anymore. I also had to move on...
