Before anyone jumps on this thread saying they are both Hillbillys or Rednecks, I have to tell you that you are dead wrong (Read some of the lyrics)
Anyway my vote goes to Mellencamp, his albums "The Lonesome Jubilee" and "Scarecrow" contain some brilliant song writing. Many people think of him as the guy who did "Jack and Diane" or "Hurts so good", but if you listen to some of the stuff he was doing in the late eighties and nineties itīs a far cry from that.
Actually when I was a teenager I thought Mellencamp was not only a great song writer but was the epitome of the cool American!

Hillbilly's and rednecks?Springsteen is from friggin New Jersey!!!!!!!!!

Both are very talented songwriters and musicians, and I enjoy their music but I have to go with The Boss.We saw him live on his Born in the USA tour and he just tore the stage up...for 4 hours.Plus the E Street Band are a very talented bunch of musicians.

springsteen is a tuneless, talentless hack with a Dylan obsession. Only his ability too wave the AmericanThumbs Down flag has kept him going. If springsteen COULD SING, WRITE MUSIC, or  PLAY GUITAR, perhaps we would take him more seriously. His blazoned performences do not fool real music fans, only propel them. There is a very fine line between popularity and quality." Springy" likes to play this ground.
Mellencamp is genuine, but insipid. His flag waving is from the heart redneck. Mellencamp is country gone pop - perhaps the first. Bush voters aside. I wouldn't give Mellencamp much room.

Springsteen any day of the year, moth or day. He is, in my opinion the best American rocker ever.

Although Mellencamp is a Springsteen inspired artist , I like his stuff better overall. Voice and arrangement -wise >>> Scarecrow was simply excellent andbetter than any Sprindsteen album

On the pure songwriting , Springsteen might be better >> his songs have may times reatrranged succesfully  >> none the least by Manfred Mann's earth Band

Completely disagree, I have Springsteenīs album "Tunnel of Love" and there is some great song writing on there.

Also, why bring Bush into the discussion? Mellencamp isnīt a Bush supporter, Reagan may have used "Pink Houses" for his campaign but that doesnīt make Mellencamp a Bush supporter.

I completely disagree with you here. Although Dylan may be one of Springsteen's influences, Springsteen's musical roots go back much farther as you may realize when listening to his Pete Seeger songs project.

Only his ability too wave the AmericanThumbs Down flag has kept him going.
I hope you don't mistake the cover of Born In The USA as proof for Springsteen's alleged flag waving. Springsteen is aware of the faults of American politics and society and has expressed his criticism in quite a number of songs.

If springsteen COULD SING, WRITE MUSIC, or  PLAY GUITAR, perhaps we would take him more seriously.
Listen to his albums and you should reconsider.

Mellencamp is genuine, but insipid. His flag waving is from the heart redneck. Mellencamp is country gone pop - perhaps the first.
Maybe you misinterpret Mellencamp's engagement with the Farm Aid charity as being redneck?

No-one can say springsteen can't write if they ever heard Born to Run. It simply makes you want to jump in the car and just drive 'til you get close to the edge of the world (nice one..), haha...

What was the question ? Who is the most annoying ? Can we add Don Henley to the list of choices and then I'll vote all of the above !

What is the future of prog ? Genesis reunion ? I'm not telling! That could upset the thyme/space continuum.

Mellancamp.  Springsteen is overrated and pretentious, and recently too political for my tastes.

^I would give that too Frank Zappa, The Doors, Allman Brothers, Nirvana, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Guns and Roses, Mr Bungle.  Those bands merit the award for best American rock outfit/rocker more than Bruce Springteen.

Really?? Come on out, all you Hammill fans! It shows Springsteen has some hidden depths Clap

I have albums of neither of them (Mellencamp / Springsteen), and I can't judge Mellencamp on the hit singles I know, but I listened to some Springsteen music, also other stuff than the hits, and I think Springsteen is very talented indeed, both in writing melodies as well as in writing very poetic lyrics. I also went to one of his concerts, and I must say: it was the liveliest concert I ever saw.

They're both a bit outside my musical spectre, but I admire Springsteen for his talent and his stage presence. And since tonight... for his taste LOL
