Proto-Prog definitionRock Bands in existence prior to 1969 that influenced the development of progressive rock. The late 60's was a predominately experimental period for music. These bands were moving in a stream that eventually led to prog. The influence could have come from new sophisticated forms of writing and playing music, recording techniques, new instruments and vocal harmonies to name a few. Some of these bands became progressive rock bands themselves others did not.Personally, I don't think this description applies to the Byrds. They were essentially a country rock band, who made great music. Even "Eight miles high" (the "Untitled" version) was just elongated through a jam.

Byrds are my favorite band of the 60s (more than The Beatles) but they don't belong here.
Sure that they had their "art-rock" and psychedelic moments, bust several other bands had too - even The Hollies with 'Crusader' or 'Fifi, the flea'.
