What would you and Ivan say are the most important prog metal albums, the top 3
Just curious...(Like the CTTE of Prog Metal)
I don´t think it´s flame throwing, we´are all friends here, just talking about music

I don't really judge music by its importance, although I surely will listen to things people find "important", just because it is also "popular". But watch out and don't get those two words mixed up. The latest PoS will not influence much quality prog, but it is as popular as few Prog-Metal bands will ever get with ANY album. On the contrary, for instance, Ved Buens Ende's amazing debut is of greater importance than anything else in the Post-Black subgenre, but due to its unique sound that not many will EVER appreciate, knowing that the aesthetics it presents contradicts the majority's values in Prog Metal.
I can't really say what the three most important in prog-metal are, but I suppose one could mention Atheist's sophomore release, Death's Human, Dream Theater's IaW (not that I like it at all, but it influenced many and is important for many bands playing prog-metal relying on heavy technique accents and based around traditional, power or speed metal), something by Queensryche, DEFINITELY Voivod's Dimensional Hatross...
Back on topic, I've never heard Mindflow (in fact, I actually mistakingly recommended them to the PMT a few days ago, thinking we hadn't got them), which of the two albums do I get first?

Downloading two albums from a single band is a crime for a person with 600 MB of free disk space.

No, certainly not Greg, I mostly do stuff all in good fun.
For me, I'd see it as 2 lists ( one of stuff I'd suggest to others and my own favs)
For others:
1. Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane (a very accessible release) 2. Tool - Lateralus (though not my fav. Tool record, it's certainly enjoyed by many) 3. Dream Theater - Awake (my favorite DT record, and I find it easily better than SFAM)
My own self-righteous opinion:
1. Opeth - Still Life (the record to own, as I have stated numerous times) 2. Kong - Best of Kong (not considered PM by the team - but I think it is - it's in Prog Related, I've reviewed all their albums but one and wrote a bio on them) 3. Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone in Copper Tongue (avant-garde metal that I think was easily the best record of 06)

Thanks for all the info guys
Regarding which Mindflow album to download, "Mind over body" is the best IMHO

Aié? Ok, I will download that, thanks. =]
But are not Mindflow only about "complexity", are they? ;-)

I do not know if they are all that like Pain of Salvation. Surely not at all like TPE, at least. As for Remedy Lane, I am not very keen at it, and know it less than TPE. Do not think Mindflow is that much like SFAM either, but here also I am not keen at SFAM (though I like DT very much).

That I also could hear. :-)
As for the three PM albuns, I would consider albuns that helped to define the genre - and my list might not have, as could be expected, one album from Queensryche, one from FW and one from DT. Prom metal was getting around earlier than that, I think.

^ well, the vocals are really, really similar to what Gildenlöw did on Remedy Lane - not just the lead vocals, also the way the background vocals are constructed, and some of the intonation tricks the singer uses occasionally.
It's not a bad thing - it works in the context of the album. But it prevents me from awarding them with really high ratings or proclaiming them as the next big prog band in one line with Dream Theater or Pain of Salvation.

This is fair enough. I can well see that there is still much to their work that is derived - and though that may serve as a beginning, every artist must become original in order to be among the great.
