Topic: best prog guitar tone on an album Posted: February 01 2007 at 10:19 |

The tone of the guitar is the way it "SOUNDS", not what is played on it.....
Gotta go with "Wish You Were Here" for a great warm guitar tone....Gilmour may not be my favorite player, but a real "tonemeister"....even live!
Conversely, Howe is my favorite player, but I agree his tone can be a bit harsh, or brittle, or tinny at times, especially when he uses a Telecaster.....(Think the solo on Soundchaser)
Perhaps the most signature guitar tone in rock is Brian May's....NO ONE sounds like him, because he uses (most of the time) the guitar that he and his father built together....

I dont understand all the hype around Alex tone...some albums sound terrible, the guitars anyways...like the first three and Permanent Waves...thouse synth guitar sounds are awful

Quite difficult, but I voted for Hemispheres.
Alex's tone on that is great, though I think his tone on Caress Of Steel is even better!

- Rush - Hemispheres not really, Alex never hit it with the perfect sound for me
- Porcupine tree - Deadwing Oh yes!!! Definitly
- Pink Floyd - Dark SIde of the moon The best sound mr Gilmour ever had
- Gentle Giant - INterview No idea, havent heard it yet
- King Crimson - Red Yes! The heaviest guitar sound of the ´70, yet so sophisticated
- Yes - Fragile Here mr Howe plays so clean, with almoust no distortion...I agree
- Rush - 2112 no
- Pink Floyd - Wish you were Here A less...bombastic sound, less effects, its still very good
- Genesis - Nursery Cryme No, too dirty for it own sake
- Dream Theatre - any album ( I 'dont know them) I would say the sound is normally very good, specially in later albums
- Tool - Lateralus It works for them, but I woulnt put it in a top list
- Mahavisnu Orchestra - Bird of fire The perfect sound for Mahavishnu
- Queen - II May always has his personal sound, it doesnt change that much
- other - name it mmm...how about... the guitars in Opeth´s Blackwater park?

Steve Vai has always had the best guitar tone, end of discussion.
I don't care if you think his material is w**kery, or what not. The man creates tonal bliss and has always had the sweetest of vibrato's (for those in the know - guitar players - it's a circle vibrato that he basically invented to create a fuller sound)

That's a tough one... Most albums featuring Steve Hackett. Gilmour on Meddle (particularly Echoes) Andy Latimer doesn't even need good production, his tone is so good. Mike Holmes' sound on Dark Matter is amazing... Lifeson on Signals... Ah, there are too many great prog guitar sounds on record.

How about Nick Barrett on Pendragon's "Believe"? Great electric and acoustic tones throughout.

Hm.... out of this list...
1.Yes- Fragile
2. PF - WYWH
3. Tool - Lateralus
4. Other - Anglagard - Hybris and Flower Kings - any of the albums up to space revolver
The "other" option calls for a VERY long list, but I dont have much time right now

Manuel Göttsching has a great tone. Just listen to his playing on the first side of Ash Ra Tempel's "Join Inn".
