Topic: Enchant... Prog Metal??? Posted: February 23 2007 at 13:41 |
I wrote a review for an Enchant album looong ago... But I didn't realize it then... Today I did: Enchant... Prog-Metal???? What has metal have todo with the San Francisco band? Kansas is art-rock, Cryptic Vision is art rock, Magellan is art-rock, Explorer's Club is in art-rock... all of them heavier than Enchant, but with at least some similarities (the Kansas inspiration mostly)...but Enchant is Prog-Metal?? I think they should be moved....

I vote the last option cause frankly I have never heard of the band and I like adding useless comments to polls I know nothing about!

Enchant were moved to Prog Metal from Art Rock with the agreement of the Prog-Metal team. If they want to have them moved back to AR, they can ask me or other ART members. Otherwise, they will stay where they are.

Seriously, they are not metal to me, but I still do not like the band.
On the other hand LTE are nothing to do with metal to me, and I like the band a lot!
Enchant sound to me like lower quality mixture of Rush with Kansas.

No, I don´t think they are prog metal at all.
The problem is that their record company calls them Progressive/Rock/Metal.
Great band BTW!!

Definitely not prog metal. They have their harder moments, but they never really dabbled in metal territory. I have more than a few albums by Enchant and, in my humble opinion, art rock is their rightful place. You just have to know their main influences (Kansas, Rush, Saga) to know they fit in art rock.

That guitar sound is not metal. Isn't the guitar sound how you define if a band is metal or not?

A big NO!! They have some heavy riffs, but that's not enough to categorise tham as Prog Metal. They're a kind of Art Rock, with Neo proggish sound, IMO. And they should be in Art Rock, definitely.
BTW, what are Magellan doing in Art Rock?? They're modern Symphonic Prog!! Anyone agrees?

I don't know.... I think they have metal elements, symphonic elements.... Impending Ascencion was symph-ish, but the two latest ones (Impossible F and SFAM) are more on the metal side.... I don't know....
Explorer's Club, on the other hand, is metal+sympho....
I don't know
But please, check this poll, admin team... I suggest Enchant to be sent to Art Rock, and The T to be sent to The Prog Hall of Fame...

Later Enchant is prog-metal to me, Im not too familiar with their earlier stuff.
Magellan was in the Prog-metal category in the beginning here, but was later moved to Art Rock. Im not sure which catergory they really belong in though, all their albums have strong elements of Neo-Prog, Symph and Prog-Metal at the same time.

Enchant fall in between art rock and prog metal . If I was looking for an art rock band and I read about Enchant being art rock on this site I`d probably think that Enchant get just a bit too heavy to be Art rock, because they probably are. If I was looking for a prog metal band here I`d be thinking Enchant are not typical prog metal, and perhaps not heavy enough !
I believe there is a time when a combined style is needed Enchant are "art prog metal" something ? many prog bands especially from the Magna Carta label fall into this category.

Like Masque stated,Enchant are one of those bands that are right on that line where you have trouble figuring out which single genre they should be placed in.In my opinion they are a little too heavy for Art Rock, and I have no problem with them being in prog metal.
Magellan is another band that combine quite a few different styles/sounds into their music and it makes them hard to pin down. They definitely aren't prog metal, and I am the one who suggested they be moved.

Who cares what they're called. A great band that isn't the most complex, I think they fall between later era Rush and "Parallels" era Fates Warning.

Art rock for me. I'm cool with the Prog Metal classification here though. I consider them an excellent "intro band" for folks who are new to the genre of prog metal. Art Rock or Prog Metal, it doesn't matter, I love their music anyways.
