I know theres been several threads on this band before but PA's search function is useless (or I am) so I'll make a new one.
Right, I've been listening to several of their songs and they've got me interested, I was just wondering what are the best albums of theirs to start with? |

I haven't heard all of them, but I highly recommend The Great Cold Distance.

Great Cold Distance is great, as well as Last Fair Deal Gone Down.

I have The Great Cold Distance and Viva Emptiness.. they're both great, but Viva Emptiness is slightly better in my opinion. I would go for that one.

Their first two albums represent pretty much a completely different band (though most of the same members are in place), as at that point they played a style of death/doom metal completely unlike their later direction. Brave Murder Day is the best representation of this era, but it's most likely not what you're looking for.
Their later more rock influenced era generally has Last Fair Deal Gone Down cited as its peak... my personal favorite is Viva Emptiness, although you can't go wrong with The Great Cold Distance either. |

Exactly my thoughts.
From the "non-growling vocals era" my personal favorite ( and therefore I highly recommend) is Great Cold Distance, followed by Last Fair Deal Gone Down. Viva Emptiness and Tonights decision is also worth checking out.
Factoids from wiki:
Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt performed the growling vocals on Brave Murder Day and Sounds of Decay after regular Katatonia singer (and then drummer) Jonas Renkse became unable to scream properly. During this time, the band decided to change their sound to a more soft sound with clean vocals beginning with 1998's Discouraged Ones. This shift in instrumental tone and vocal style was accompanied by an appreciable decrease in the length of the band's songs, with latter period songs typically lasting around four minutes. I've only heard Discouraged Ones and I recommend it wholeheartedly.
