Topic: What song(s) got you into your favorite band(s) Posted: December 19 2007 at 01:30 |
It doesn't have to be the very first song you heard from them (as sometimes first impressions can sound like crap) but a song that was made you think "Wow.. these guys are actually pretty good!" And had you seek out more from them.
1. Genesis - The Knife (I bought all their albums in order until W&W) 2. Yes - Roundabout or I've Seen All Good People 3. Jethro Tull - Thick As a Brick 4. Marillion - Garden Party (He Knows you Know the next day) 5. Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance 6. ELP - Hoedown 7. Frank Zappa - Catholic Girls 8. Queen - Another One Bites the Dust (not really prog but meh) 9. Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
It's 2:30 AM and I can't think outside of the Major prog bands but I'll edit this once I get a good nights sleep..
But now for yours!

..."Bungle in the Jungle"...
(hangs head in SHAME)
Although, twas "Bungle" that made me buy the Tull, but twas "Hunting Girl" that kept me there. And, conincidentally, got me here.

You gain an extra point in my book for having Hunting Girl as one of their favourite all time Tull songs. That and the Whistler (Hangs head in shame) are my two most-listened to songs on that album and a couple of my all-time favourite songs by them.

Yeah, gotta love that pipe organ/poisonous metal guitar riff. And "The Wizzler" takes the stand as one of my all time favorite Tull-tunes. Not my absolute favorite though, that'd still be "Minstrel."
Which has always amused me...I was not supposed to be named The Whistler! But there was some jerk here who never posts who beat to the other title. Of course, by now, it'd be strange to be called something else...

Hearing Rush's "Spirit of Radio" changed my musical direction dramatically - albeit that I go off on tangents quite often. Discovery of Porcupine Tree through "Waiting" and "Even Less" reinvigorated my interest in modern Prog (and got the wife hooked!).
Funny thing is that my two brothers and I were all into Camel, Steve Hackett and Rick Wakeman in the mid 70's and have deviated from one another by picking up different strands from the music. One went for Jethro Tull then Fairport Convention and became increasingly "folky" (not quite open-toed sandals but close). The other went for keyboards and became a big Tangerine Dream/Kraftwerk fan. I went heavier via Rush into mainstream hard rock/AOR, dabbled with some jazz, pop/rock and guitar gods like Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani, but also like their Jethro Tull/Tangerine Dream stuff.

Rush - Bastille Day and A Passage to Bangkok were the two songs that I initially enjoyed the most and led me to explore more Rush. I didn't initally like Tom Sawyer or Limelight when they were originally released and played on the radio. They are two of my favorites from them now however, although that is relatively speaking since I probably have a hundred "favorites" from Rush.
Yes - probably Rhythm of Love or Owner of a Lonely Heart; later learned of classic rock songs that I had heard on the radio but never really connected with Yes.
Genesis - probably something from Invisible Touch; didn't discover prog years until much later.
ELP - Karn Evil 9 - I've always liked this song; also, probably Lucky Man.
Jethro Tull - Aqualung; radio played; decided to investigate further.
Pink Floyd - Probably Another Brick on the Wall, but by that point both the Wall and DSOTM were heavily played on the radio so any of those songs would have led me to Pink Floyd.
Dream Theater - Pull Me Under; from the first time I saw the video on MTV (of all places).

Yes: "Owner of a Lonely Heart". I have this song to thank for my introduction to progressive rock.
Genesis: "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)". I remember hearing it on my iPod and thinking "this is the same band that produced 'We Can't Dance'?" I became obsessed with Gabriel-era Genesis.
King Crimson: "21st Century Schizoid Man". After this song reached its climax, I just sat there and thought "WTF?".
Emerson, Lake & Palmer: "Karn Evil 9". When I first heard this, I thought "oh my God, I know now why this band is so revered. THIS is progressive."
Porcupine Tree: "Nil Recurring". A brilliant instrumental, I was hooked instantly.
Pink Floyd: "Pigs (Three Different Ones)"
Rush: "2112"
Jethro Tull: "Cross-Eyed Mary"

Frank Zappa - Let's Make The Water Turn Black
Were only in it for the money is the first Zappa album I heard and this song is the first one that I really loved. Now Zappa is my favourite artist and this album is one of my all time best.
King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man
Same thing as Zappa
Henry Cow - Living in the heart of the beast
I first heard this song on the Stellar Attraction online radio and I was so impressed that I bought the album right after my work shift
Thats it for my top 3 bands/artists!

Art Bears: "Out of town, my work takes me out of town..." I practically applauded when I heard it for the first time.
comedically I had ignored King Crimson for ages, so having eventually hearing that DGM sampler, the song that broke me into the bandomorphication of Satan himself was... "Cage", from Sometimes God Hides, culled from Vrooom EP and never appearing on an actual album. lol
...and finally in that rare trinity of perfect bands, "Hortz fur den Stechen West" by you-know-who!
