 Topic: Tool a Heavy Prog band ?

Lately I been thinking should Tool be in the Heavy Prog category. Yeah they have metal in their music but they are not really a all Prog Experimental metal band like a Isis or Pelican . Choose yes or no. And Tool haters stay away from this poll there are many of you on this site!

There is a fine line between heavy music and metal, and I think Tool cross over into metal. Constant Drop D playing, heavy on the distortion, and dont tend to do standard rock things, like pick up the acoustics.
I dont really know how to explain it too well...

Given your examples I think you're confusing Post Metal with Prog Metal.

I think they could be under either catagory. Post metal seems to fit them more...but then again Heavy Prog seems like a good fit for them...

I have to admit, I've always thought of them as Ambient Metal...
...for my money, bands like Rush, Tiles, Everon, Poverty's No Crime & Enchant would be typical 'Heavy Prog'
...but as most people on this forum will tell you, I've never been very good at categorisation....  |

Heavy prog... mmm maybe, would the old genre Art rock still be around I would prefer to see them there, for I think they aren´t really metal... they are a toolish type of band...jejeje

never really noticed tool haters as much as I notice tool fanboys on to the topic Tool fall in between sub genres I think and could go either way

fandango is right in his assessment of the HeavyProg genre, and Equality is right to point out your examples of Isis and Pelican are the very reason those bands are in Experimental/Post Metal ..as a long-time headbanger, I believe Tool's roots are, as most ProgMetal artists, clearly in metal (with a hint of Indie in their case),

I've always thought of Tool as metal, not because they are hardcore, cause they aren't, or because they have killer riffs and solos cause they don't, but I've always thought of metal as a more intelligent form of music. And since they are IMO the most intelligent band and use metal instruments, they fall into some sort of metal category. And since they do progress music, I've always put them in some sort of progressive metal category.
What progressive category is beyond me. Tool metal, perhaps. (Hey, we have Zeuhl which is basically Magma type music  ) |

As was pointed out, there is a pretty clear distinction between heavy prog and prog metal.
Tool is no heavy prog band by any stretch of the imagination.

Metal, no question.
and the Experimental/Post Metal genre has more than just Post Metal in it, as witnesed by Dark Suns, Green Carnation, In the Woods, Indukti, Tool, Kayo Dot, maudlin of the Well, Orphaned Land etc.... None of which have much conection to the Post Metal bands like Isis, Pelican, Cult of Luna etc....

I used to think Tool would fit better in Heavy Prog as well...until I realized this.
