ONLY VOTE IF YOU KNOW BOTH BANDS.
These two are my main musical obsessions right now. Pretty different styles between the two; where Magma is often dark and moody, Cardiacs are often loud and playful. Both have produced several albums which I would consider masterpieces (though I will admit I'm not as familiar with a majority of the Cardiacs albums, that will change soon enough). |

C'mon Jon
Yes, the Cardiacs are really good, but nobody can match Magma although I've admitted only heard a handful of Cardiacs material |

I'd comfortably say they were about equal in my book.

Well, in my situation, when I want cheery/playful music I generally don't go the avant-garde route, so yeah

I wouldn't exactly call them "cheery". Most of my favorite bizarre/playful groups are from RIO/Avant...these guys, Samla Mammas Manna, etc.

Yeah Samla Mammas Manna are another group that I feel similarly about. I like their music but it's a tad too silly/ADD for me

The Cardiacs - without any hesitation. MDK bores me to death.

Hmm I've always wanted to try The Cardiacs. What album should I begin with? |

I'll provide two tracks here. If you like the first one more, start with A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window, and if you like the second, start with Sing to God (they're both available on iTunes, with Sing to God being in two parts, both necessary IMO). If you don't like either one...run away!!! Edited by SaltyJon - August 31 2010 at 14:39 |

I'm not as familiar with the Cardiacs, though I've heard a few albums, and various other tracks, whereas I have over twenty Magma albums, so voting would be unfair. That said, while I really like The Cardiacs, it hasn't had the effect on me that Magma has. Magma was revelatory. The Cardiacs are very good, though, and I need to get more of the music. I haven't listened to the Cardiacs in a long time, and I'm listening again to Sing to God -- love it. Hadn't listened in ages. They're very different. It was about time we had a Pronk vs. Zeuhl poll. Usually it's all Cardiacs vs. The Residents and Magma vs. Koenjihyakkei (which is also punky) etc.

Yeah, I figured this was a poll which hadn't been done very often (if at all) so I decided to go for it.

I'm glad you did do this topic, because of it I'm revisiting Cardiacs' music, and will be delving deeper into the band's music. Aside from discovering new-to-me music, one thing I love about such topics is that they can prompt me to re-listen to music I haven't heard in quite a while.

Gotta say, I really dig both. I think I may prefer the first slightly more.

Well I suppose we can indirectly thank both Trouserpress and Rune2000 as well then, because Rune2000's review of Sing to God was what got me to listen to them again recently, when I really fell in love with that album, and TP recommended me an order in which to check out the rest of their material (which I've done thanks to iTunes) which really made the music grab me even tighter. |

Then either would probably be a good starting point. If you're going for cost-effectiveness (in case you don't like the band or something) I'd say A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window since it's only one disc and therefore only $9.99 on iTunes instead of StG's two discs and 2x $9.99. |

I knew Cardiacs' music before joining PA, but Trouserpress' abundant enthusiasm got me into exploring it more after I joined PA. I don't often look at PA reviews , but I have noted that Rune has written good reviews of much music I really like. I had read Alexander's (Rune2000) review of Sing to God before because there was a topic where someone was, as I recall, slamming Cardiacs and I was looking up the reviews of the albums (perhaps there was a reported review for Sing to God? A few years ago I would have remembered such things easily, but my memory loss is another topic. Maybe I was just looking into some rater's ratings since a low rating of something piqued my interest). |

Yeah, it wasn't even reading the review that got me to listen to it again, but I saw the album art and felt like listening to it. As I was listening the other day, I did read the review though, and enjoyed it.
