People forget that the only reason they got a major record deal was because when Patton joined Faith No More, it was under one condition: that his band gets a record deal.

I figured as such, but still.... I wonder what the label was expecting. LOL

It's a bit weird as Cullifornia is my fav, but when I first took notice it seemed like Disco had the biggest following here.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

And yeah, I listen to Merzbow and Sunn O))) and Wolf Eyes and Nurse With Wound so I'm not an "OMG AVANT" person, as you've so labeled Mr. Bungle's fans. I'm calling them avant-garde because just, straight up, that's what they are. I'm wondering what you think is NOT avant about them.
I view avant-garde music as, primarily, heavily dissonant/unmelodic/unstructuctured music. Therefore, genre bouncing is not avant-garde music. If each individual section is a perfect pastiche of a style, splicing them together with whiplash ADD doesn't make the whole piece more progressive than each genre section being a whole song an a whole album. If it makes you feel better, I feel the same way about Naked City's splicing, and I'm aware my annoyance with the whole concept is not widely shared. laplace is the only other person here (that I can remember) I've ever seen make a strong argument against it, but he hated music even more than I do so people didn't pay much attention to him. And not everything John Zorn does is avant-garde! Combining genres is progressive, but I consider that experimental music (which in my mind is a much broader term than avant-garde). I think the gap between our understanding of the words is probably the issue here.

What is not avant-garde about them is that each individual section is usually very melodic and structured. That doesn't mean you shouldn't like them, nor do I think every Mr. Bungle fan is inexperienced with avant-garde music, nor am I unimpressed by the fact that Mike Patton got it released on a major label (although Boredoms are on Warner Japan :P). My comment was primarily reflecting my annoyance that so many people refer to DV as the most experimental album of the '90s/all time etc. etc. Again, equal opportunity hater: I get similarly annoyed when many people talk about Trout Mask Replica.

Ah, I get it. Your argument is essentially that weird=/=avant. I can respect that.

I didn't mean to come off quite so angry earlier, sorry.

It's ok, it's just PA, we can always hug it out.

Yeah, I have higher standards than most people, but I certainly wouldn't argue that Mr. Bungle is mostly indistinguishable from what you'd normally expect from Warner. Unlike some of the bands listed here. ;-)

I really like all of Mr. Bungle's albums, but Disco Volante is no doubt my favorite of their three.

Would you like some Bailey's?

Disco Volante and the debut are two of my favorite albums ever, though DV wins with a nose.

Tough choice - I think I'll go with California because it's a pop masterpiece. And ditto to 'what might have been' re: a fourth album.

I think Disco Volante is miles ahead of the other two and one of the most perfect albums of all time. I often cite it as my favorite album ever.

California was a serious letdown for me.  Disco Volante's my favorite.  The self titled one was great for a while, but then it got a bit old, and it sounds pretty ridiculous to me today.
