Lateralus has been the only one I've been able to stand. Haven't heard 10,000 Days, but I've heard the other three. Not really a fan, but Lateralus had some neat Crimson-like music on it.

10,000 Days is incredible! Haven't heard the others though.

Lateralus should do the trick, it's the definitive Tool album. Then proceed to Ænima and 10,000 Days. Undertow and Opiate are not essential but interesting enough for fans.

Lateralus is my favorite, with Ænima a VERY close second.

I agree, Lat is their most consistant work, impressive. The rest of the albums in order as above

All of their albums are really good, quite consistent too actually. Lateralus is their celebrated masterpiece, so I'd say go for that one first; 10000 Days would be my second choice. Excellent Art, Experimental Metal. Danny Carey is a beast on drums.

Tool is just SOOOOOO monotonous. So i really don't listen to them much, besides some stuff off of 10,000. Maybe some of Lateralus here and there. The Patient is my favorite song off of the album, and Rosetta Stoned on 10,000 Days.

The Patient is awesome, definitely a stand out. Reminds me of 'H' from Aenima in some ways

I say it doesn't matter which one you get. Except for Opiate. Don't get Opiate. With any of thier other albums you will be able to tell if you like the band or not. Get the one with the coolest cover... that should work fine for your purposes. My fav is 10,000 Days if it really matters to you.

For me, Lateralus has more peaks but 10000 Days is more consistant. I'd go reverse chronological order.

I hate them all apart from half of Lateralus, but I think I might be in the minority. Judging by my music taste I should love them but there's something that just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe the overhype, poor production; something like that.
At least try Lateralus, but don't expect to like any other albums.

Aenima definitely; listened to it long time ago and to this day, I never got bored with it. Now that's what i call a great album, something that never gets old.

My fave TOOL album is 10,000 DAYS. From Vicarious to The Pot to Right In Two --- you will find primal, profound music and lyrics throughout the album.
