Hip-Hop has a bad rep, and with guys like Lil' Wayne and Jay Z around this is no wonder! Just my personal opinions of course... However, underneath the macho gangster chauvinistic bullsh*t there is a core of real musicality, impressive groove architecture and poetry, a lot of the time improvised. So here is a thread to celebrate all that great stuff. Here's a few gems of my own:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7x12edq49k

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A75MsdqU-jc (This one has Ron Carter on double bass, phenomenal album too)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-lRd7FzoLU (Seen these guys... Damn they have a tight band too, with Questlove on drums who also produces all the electronic grooves)

Myself, I love the jazzier stuff. But there's plenty of other straight ahead stuff out there which is amazing too.

Anyone else share my love for the genre?

N.B. My embedding function is having a grump so I've resulted in hyperlinks, sorry!

Would you like it if I posted this in every single prog thread I see? I don't understand why you can't just avoid a thread that you have no interest in as opposed to expressing your disinterest to everyone viewing.

Beastie Boys counts right?

I really love them, they have a lot of music for anyone who likes rock or jazz and of course the singing itself is really good.

^ that reminds me that I forgot about The Avalanches. They're usually more on the EDM side of things, but have a hip-hop edge.

One of my favorite hip-hop artist is Metazen. His music is on bandcamp and he really brings brilliantly written lyrical content as well as sometimes some post-rocky guitar passages.

^Ghost Dance of Cosmic Tongues is my favorite song by him.

More straight-forward approach..

Newest release - haven't listened too much but sounds more mechanical -

ikr, listen to his stuff as "Del Tha Funky Homosapein", it's really good too

For me though, I haven't really explored too far past the classic hip-hop guys ie. Wu-Tang Clan, Tribe Called Quest, MF DOOM, Mos Def, and so on... At the moment, I don't really have the desire to explore the genre much more.
