smartpatrol, for abstract hip-hop:

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
Company Flow - Fun Crusher Plus
Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonecologyst
MF Doom - Operation Doomsday
(all on youtube)

if you want to trace the roots check out Freestyle Fellowship - To Who It May Concern...

instrumental wise  DJ Q-Bert - Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Musik is essential:

for something similar to Sugarhill Gang:

Classic wise, you need A Tribe Called Quest.
MF Doom/Madvillian's Madvillainy is an album you need to hear.

My favorite is Metazen though.

I kind of gave up investigating the experimental hip-hop world though, i need to get back into it :S

I'd be open to any suggestions you have, but if I'd especially like if it was sorta interesting and different, musically. Something really distorted would be cool, too. Lyrically I'd like something abstract and/or surreal.

This was my introduction to MF Doom, and Ceelo does such a great job here. Real eerie yet funky.
Great groove on that bass.

I'll say what I've always said... If you think a whole genre is bad then you obviously aren't looking hard enough

Seriously though, opinions are cool. We can't all like everything.

I don't really listen to any hip hop pretty much ever, but sometimes I run into something impressive. This is the latest such:

The guy who played it for me is in PA under the name Anderson III, he's a fine rapper.

Dismissing the entire genre of hip-hop is the same as dismissing one band, Nickelback. Flawless logic.
