'Duke' is a great album too !! Even 'Genesis' (1983) is pretty good I hear 'That's All' through the work radio sometimes which is cool - I also hear most tracks of 'Invisible Touch' (o.k. - not Brazilian, Domino or Tonight x3), and those flogged to death tracks just drive me nuts

I prefer the run of albums from Trick to Duke more than the run of PG albums. Lamb and SEBTP are not all that in my eyes while Nursery Chryme doesn't do much for me neither does Trespass bar The Knife. Foxtrot stands up though
Trick gets my vote , pretty much redefining prog and influencing the next generation of prog bands.. I love ATTWT even Snowbound. Don't mind the romantic themes that seems to send most prog fans running for the hills. Duke could have been the best of the bunch but fails on just a few lame tracks that drags it down.W&W is a bit odd as it seems a step backwards after Trick to me with some last hurrah of old style symph prog. I don't think this album gels at all but its still a 4 star album.
After Duke, Genesis noticeably changed direction although there are some gems like Domino and The Brazilian to be enjoyed. Fading Lights is also a wonderful reminder of what Genesis at their best were capable of.
then came Calling All Stations

Great to see another " Genesis" Mama fan Believe it or not I love Abacab as well, a real watershed album, the title track is incredible. IT was the downturn for me although I much preferred We Cant Dance. And CAS gets a bum rap, Ray Wilson is a great vocalist and I wish they gave him more license at the time. His more recent work (s) with Stiltskin/solo is not bad either.

A Trick of the Tail, followed by Wind and Wuthering. Many folks think Genesis went to hell after Peter Gabriel left; I, on the other hand, will steadfastly hold they kicked the bucket after Steve Hackett left.

And Then There Were Three for certain. Intense, great compositions, powerful playing, fantastic lyrics, wonderful artwork on top of that.

much of what you say is true but it's missing a key ingredient to be great prog---Steve Hackett---replace his artistry with Rutherford's lumbering guitar work (and I love Mike as a bass player one of my favs) --you'd have a great album.IMO

A Trick of the Tail, although Wind & Wuthering is almost as good. I could almost vote for it for Blood on the Rooftops alone.

It's interesting how the more Phil influenced the songwriting the worse the material got. For me Trick. Wind and Three was a special Genesis period. Trick and Wind still had great Prog elements but were directionally pointing to the result of And Then There were Three. Not so much cause Hackett moved on, but the Rutherford and Collins songwriting was taking over as Collins had his creative outlet with Brand X. With Duke and Abacab it felt more Banks and Collins influenced and after that they stayed with the pop formula and rarely strayed. I never saw Home By The Sea, or Dominoe as true Genesis. Then when you hit No Son Of Mine and Jesus he Knows Me. This was Collins pop. Now that I think back on it, it was Phil and that crap drum machine that ruined it all. In fact, the only time they come close to what they were really capable of is in the song Fading Lights where Banks riffs out a bit underneath an awesome odd-time percolation from Collins backbeat groove. That for me was the last great moment from Genesis.

A Trick of the Tail hands down. It still retains the charm and elegance that made the earlier albums with Gabriel so enjoyable and beloved by myself of course.
Wind and Wuthering is good too with some strong highlights (One for the Vine, Eleventh Earl of Mar, Blood on the Rooftops) but it kind of seems like a slightly more lackluster replication of the previous album to me.
As for the rest of the albums, there's bits and pieces of their later stuff that I really enjoy (songs like Home By The Sea and No Son of Mine stand out for me, and hell I even like In Too Deep), but i can't get into the albums as whole full-length experiences like with the previous classics. Although Duke is probably the best out of all the albums made after Steve Hackett left though, I definitely enjoy that one too.
