Prog or not?
"Sonic Seasonings", "Digital Moonscapes", and all the classical stuff. Carlos is a Moog pioneer, but is she prog? |

I'm sure Walter/Wendy has been considered in the past. I'll leave others to clarify though.

A combination of New Age and Classical, she is not prog in my estimation. An important person in electronic music never the less.

I've always thought of her as a classical musician rather than a progressive rock musician because she's much more talented. Also, besides her amazing talents, I've not heard her rock. Influential on prog, but not of it.

I only have Switched On Bach, the pioneer Moog album. Consisting entirely of JS Bach covers it can not be called a Prog album, and honestly listening to it from start to finish tires me a bit, but considering that the Moog was monophonic and the recording techniques of the period it is nothing less than impressive the amount of work which she (he at that time) must have had to put into that recording. Hats off from me.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure she has come up before. The best thing I have heard is an original called The Beauty In The Beast. That one might warrant inclusion by it's own right.
![]() I got a used copy of Digital Moonscapes and it was disappointing. I should add that my brother (older) had some Walter in his album collection and some Tomita, who does my favorite reinterpretations of classical pieces. There's another more obscure guy, Patrick Gleeson, that did a nice synth version of The Planets that I used to have. Edited by Slartibartfast - March 24 2013 at 13:24 |

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

It was quite a while ago now (2005), but there is a decent thread for this artist in the Prog Music Lounge forum - here: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4868

Wow, just came across this thread in a search, after wondering if Carlos was listed possibly under the `electronic' genre.
I haven't heard the `Classics' albums, but I'm very curious as to what people think of the album `Sonic Seasonings'. I'm listening to it right now at work on my ipod and headphones, and it is a seriously dark, fascinating and experimental work. Like a mix of `Zeit'-era Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, early Pink Floyd, and to my ears a massive influence on the electronic/drone genre. I'll have to see if I can dig up some Youtube samples! Opinions please of anyone who has heard that work! Edited by Aussie-Byrd-Brother - September 29 2013 at 12:36 |

Probably because the 'electronic' genre is not a category here. However, Progressive Electronic is.
While the world is knee-deep in electronic genres of various descriptions, only one of them is Progressive Electronic as we define it here. I am pretty certain that Philippe is aware of Ms Carlos and her work beyond just "Switched On Bach".

Thanks, Dean, I thought much the same thing.
I'm listening to the expanded CD version of `Sonic Seasonins', and this one is definately `Progressive Electronic'. Especially listening to the added bonus tracks, it's totally up there with artists like Popul Vuh, as well as the others I mentioned above, etc. But one album in a particular style does not warrant an add, and from the sounds of those `Switched on Bach' ones, I wonder if it might be the `black sheep' of his/her work? ![]() I'll just go pimp its merits on the `What albums did I listen to today?' thread instead! ![]() Edited by Aussie-Byrd-Brother - September 29 2013 at 13:41 |

It really wouldn't bother me if she were added under Prog-Related, where we keep several others artists influential to Prog. More than that would be a stretch.

Agreed. Or rather, I'd be just happy to see her added! (If I was more active commentator considering the bordercase additions, Prog Purists would probably hate me... ![]() |

I would agree with this, as there is no doubt that her work beginning with Switched On Bach influence much of the electronic music that followed.

Wendy Carlos has always fit into my definition of prog in a broader sense. She should fit neatly into Electronic Prog or Prog Related.
