Topic: Maynards lyrics Posted: December 09 2004 at 10:38 |
This is an extention of the "prog songs with crappy lyrics" thread. In the thread i nominated Maynard as the worst prog lyricist and created quite the uproar. Id like this thread to continue the argument.
Alright:
Many of you said that the word f**k is a part of life and therefore should be used in lyrics. i cant say i disagree with you on that, but i just think its a simple, generic, vomit inducing way to show emotion, especially when used in Tool :" f**k YOU!! f**k YOU!! YOU MOTHER f**kERS!!!" way to capture the complexities of anger Maynard!!! NOW, a talented band like Pink Floyd for example , would use the obsenity to add to the emotional complexity of a specific sequence, something like: "You f**ked up old Hag!! HaHA, charade you are!" Unlike Tool, this adds to the lyric, it isnt just a sad excuse to create shock value and to make up for lyrical limitations. Another thing a few of you said is that dark music needs dark lyrics with obsenties......k........ try "Sheep" by Floyd, no cursing whatsoever and its more powerfull and angry than anything Tool have ever released or ever will. And dark melodies needing dark lyrics?? Try God Speed You Black Emperor!!!! Why cant i seem to recall any of their lyrics...humm....... THEY DONT HAVE ANY! Dark atmospheric music does not need f**k, im sorry..... lets hear some other opinions on this, id like someone to make a strong case for Maynard other than: YEAH......TOOL IS HARDCORE MAN!!!! try me please

This is turning into one of those big Hollywood movie storylines.

TMB, I don't think there's much argument to be had. You might want to enter into a debate about it, but how can anyone defend the indefensible?!

Maynards lyrics are disturbing and antisocial, goodness knows whats going on inside his head, he is certainly obsessed with a certain sordid activity BUT I personally don't have a problem with them as far as I'm concerned his songs come over extremely expressive. I find it hard to believe that people are offended by the 'F' word nowdays!
Most of the lyrics are telling a story or an experience and to say he is not talented is like saying that Irvine Welsh or Will Self are not talented authors because they write about unsavoury subjects and use crude vocabulary too.

, but honestly that book is overrated. I understand where TMB is coming from, especially because I am surronded by people that worship maynard as a lyricist, when it is not his strong suite. If Tool is to be praised, it should be because they are talented musicians. I'm tired of the rampant verbal fellating of maynard, hes NOT the best, in fact hes NOT VERY GOOD AT ALL.

Right, because all Maynard does is obviously just scream "F*CK!!" incoherently. Find me one swear word on the album Lateralus and I might make a step towards considering your point even remotely valid.

I own the book and have tried reading it several times and always get about half way trhough before losing interest....so I agree.
but it still is regarded as a legendary book regardless what we thought of it.

Sorry man, but I think the point is that Maynard is a bad lyricist, not that he uses naughty words. That was just an example.
