Leprous--Coal (this album is utterly fantastic. Very Crimso inspired) Ayreon--The Theory Of Everything (gets better with every listen for me. Ayreon's best work to me now)

Right on! I'm especially fond of "Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium" considering the time it was released. The most 'death metal' track, the speedy "God Is Alone", was my introduction to My Dying Bride which I heard in some death metal compilation my friend let me borrow back in 1992. It stood out from the other acts due to being a bit weirder and more original than much of the rest of the compilation (featuring bands like Unleashed, Asphyx, Malevolent Creation etc.). So I got that EP and the title track blew my mind. There was very little to compare it to back then.

Ya, I never really understood why that EP is referred to as death metal rather than doom metal. Doesn't have the double-bass-drum breakneck speed and gore-satanic lyrical content of death metal...possibly because it had the growl vokills that weren't usually found in doom??? Anyway MDB was clearly doing something new back in '91 and I was always bummed that they went clean vocal-goth focus after "As the Flower Withers"...either way I'm just stoked I stumbled on the Symphonaire Infernus EP
Anyway...today's listening:
King Crimson : The Road to Red : Disc 1 : Columbus OH 4/28/74
