I'm not asking what your favourite Prog album is.
I'm not asking for you to agree with my tastes. I'm asking you to be my music matchmaker.
For anyone up to the challenge, here are some considerations that might help in your wise selection: Stuff I Like ... Mike Oldfield: LOVE: TB, Ommadawn, TB2, Amarok, Platinum, Hergest Ridge, TB3 LIKE TO MILDLY DISLIKE: QE2, Five Miles Out, Crisis, Islands, Voyager, Songs of Distant Earth, Killing Fields HATE: Encantations, Millenium Bell, Discovery, Earth Moving, Heaven's Open Pink Floyd: I love or like everything they do, but my favourites are: Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Dark Side Of The Moon, Meddle, The Wall. My least favourite would be The Final Cut. King Crimson: FAVOURITE: Lizard LIKE: Larks Tongues In Aspic, Red, Starless And Bible Black, ITCOTKC, ITWOP, The Power To Believe, Islands Robert Wyatt: Shleep (the only album I have so far, but I really like it a lot ... and the more I listen to other stuff on Spoitfy, the more I like his other stuff). Tangerine Dream: LOVE: Cyclone LIKE: A good amount of their other stuff, though nothing really stands out to me. Sort of nondescript. Porcupine Tree: LOVE: Staircase Infinities Frank Zappa: I like just about anything by FZ ... favourite album is Studio Tan. Genesis: While I'm not a huge fan, I really like a bunch of their stuff -- most everything in the Genesis Platinum Collection, but I think the guitar solo on Firth Of Fifth is probably one of the best in the history of music all rock. Not sure if any of these are considered Prog, but they're close if not "in", but I like just about anything by these artists: Supertramp, ELO, Dire Straits, Steely Dan. Some things to consider: The only album I can really take from Gentle Giant is "The Power And The Glory", but that's on an occasional basis. Anything I've heard from Hawkwind, I thought was horrid. That's probably overwhelming to anyone reasonably considering the task, but if you're willing to think it through, it'd be really cool to see who might able to hit the nail on the head. And I promise not to make a judgement until I've listened to the album at least three times, front to back (I learned long ago, that the albums I've despised the first time or two listening, often end up being my absolute favourite albums). Thanks to anyone who takes this on. And if it's worth anything, I intend on finding an interesting way of rewarding whomever is able to find my next favourite album. |

I was going to help until I read this. Why exactly do you have problems with Genesis? What is it about their style that you don't enjoy? For me, there's Genesis and then there's the rest, so I'm hugely biased when it comes to their music.

Ok, I'll go way out on a limb and suggest something completely different from anything you have listed: Love it or Hate it. How about giving Canterbury a try? Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink?

You put 'Encantations' in your hate list (that is Incantations btw). That album would comfortably be on my desert island selection along with Ommadawn which is on your love list. Quite confusing to say the least.
I could recommend some Vangelis but I have no ideas which of his albums you might like.

Based on what you like, I think you should try some Beardfish. Modern Scandinavian prog with a retro style, but which does not sound at all dated. Definite Zappa-esque and Crimson stylings. I can recommend anything from The Sane Day, through to Mammoth. (I don't have, nor have heard, the albums either side - though assume they too are well worth having. They are on my wishlist, anyway...)

... And regarding your avatar pic, I'd like to recommend you Mohribold by Andrew Taylor. As a homage to early Mike Oldfield, this album is the masterpiece.
Try this AltrOck Productions release from 2013, a Canterbury style masterpiece: Of Things That Never Were by The Worm Ouroboros
I am pretty sure that you will like Travel by The Vandelays Edited by Svetonio - April 25 2014 at 03:03 |

Someone suggested Camel, I'd add The Snow Goose to Mirage and Moonmadness
If you're into the pastoral side of prog, as your love for Hergest Ridge might imply, you could try The Geese and the Ghost by Anthony Phillips Edited by paulindigo - April 25 2014 at 09:29 |

If you really like Lizard by King Crimson and everything by Frank Zappa, you might consider checking out some fusion bands. http://www.progarchives.com/subgenre.asp?style=30
