The darkest things in my collection that would qualify (though some blur the line from prog into doom metal)
Devil Doll - Eliogabalus (prog)
Univers Zero - UZED (prog) Morte Macabre - Symphonic Holocaust (prog) Opeth - Blackwater Park (doom) Cephalic Carnage - The Halls of Amenti (doom) Christian Death - The Path of Sorrows (doom) My Dying Bride - As the Flower Withers (doom) Diamonda Galas - The Plague Mass (screeching chaos!) Pulsar - Halloween (prog) Novembers Doom - The Knowing (doom) Shub Niggurath - Les Morts Vont Vite (prog) |

Dr. Z's "Three Parts To My Soul" is one of the darkest, creepiest albums I've ever heard. "Le Poison Qui Rend Fou" by Present is also very creepy; it makes you feel like you're in walking through some dark laboratory.

7 pages and no mention of Aluk Todolo? They're a very unique French band whose style consists of trancey expanded jams that seamlessly combine modern black metal with the most abrasive types of Kosmische Musik and post-rock. The end result is some very intense, noisy music with an incredible bleak and disturbing feel to it.
Closest point of comparison would perhaps be a rawer and darker Russian Circles, but that group aren't quite as ambitious yet in their composition. |

I'd second Aluk Todolo and Morte Macabre - great suggestions.
Elend was new to me and I very much liked that piece - will investigate further. In addition: Athanor, Vos Cités Sont Des Tombeaux - a great modern addition to the Franco-Belgian axis of evil which brought us Shub-Niggurath, Present and Univers Zero. Only one question. If the names of the band, or the songs were something else, would you still feel the same? For example, if Pulsar's album was in French and it's title did not translate into "Halloween" or the picture in the cover would only suggest a literary something or other. would you still feel the same?
If you ever can, just read Matthew Gregory Lewis's book "The Monk", so you can see how someone can navigate from the sweetest of words, to the unbelievable bottom of all pits, and then some, almost within a page or two. And then wonder how it can come to an end!
This is, at least within a commercial ideal, the "face" of the worst. In music, it's hard, but I would think that we do "NOT" want to be intimidated by having the lyrics "suggest" something, instead of it being real.
As mentioned before, if you want to have an idea of some of the better written stuff in this area, Dennis Wheatley's "Black Magic Series" is actually a very difficult read that will have most of us really upset over most of it. Even I had a really hard time reading some of it. Aleister Crowley's Moonchild is the same, but he was aware that he could easily scare people, so he kept that side lighter. But his "Diary of a Drug Fiend" is massive and the best anti-drugs book EVER written!
There really is, to my imagination, no real progressive music that fits this description. For the most part, I would suggest that most of it is just playing with our imaginations and own fears ... and that is not what "evil" is really about! It's much more than just that!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Most of the RIO and Zeuhl subgenres are filled with dark themes. Namely, Guapo, Nebelnest, The Residents, Art Zoyd. You won't find much skipping through a flowery meadow there.
Outside of that, check out Virus - The Black Flux

Univers Zero - 1313, Univers Zero - Heresie, Deathspell Omega albums, Shub Niggurath, Jacula, Archaia, etc...
Like the guy above said, the Avant-Prog and Zeuhl genre are filled with these type of music.
