Now, I might be going out on a limb here but in past conversation that I've had with forum members The Mars Volta have been considered at least, allied to Prog and at most, the very future of the genre. I like The Mars Volta and I think that if Prog shot off in that direction, I wouldn't mind... However, in my years of gig going, record buying and general proggery, I have come to know and love a band who I find to be quite similar to The Mars Volta and contain a number of 'prog' elements but each time I mention them to my mates, I get shouted down in a hail of 'They're bloody sh*te!'... I like Cardiacs, and I think they are Prog. Sorry, but I do. |

Dont know much about The Cardiacs, but I loved 'Is this the life' It was one of the most played records at an alternative night I used to frequent every Sunday, in my metal/indie youth.

I heard "Guns", and i must admit that i was pretty impressed! It is the best exemple of a good mix of punk & progressive elements! It obviously souds very marginal, but at the same time very catchy and addictive. I think they are some sort of punk prog version of beatles - sargent peppers...Their style is quite retro! I don't think Mars Volta sounds like Cardiacs: Mars Volta is more alternative rock prog than punk prog. Edited by greenback |

I dunno there, greenback. I heard "Eriatarka" and it's only 6 minutes long but within that song alone it proves they're prog enough to be here. Plus, they've got 12 minute songs and 7, too: sounds like prog to me. No epics yet, but y'know... They're technically sufficient, the lyrics are dense, psychadelic elements are there, and experimentation too. If not prog, at least VERY VERY CLOSE. Now then, about Incubus...anyone heard the 4 movements of "The Odyssey" they wrote? If Radiohead is the lite version of the Porcupine Tree - Pinapple Theif - Radiohead alt trio, then Incubus is the lite of the Incubus - Tool - er, well, duo. Whatever. Discuss. |

If the "Ever so closely guarded line" by the Cardiacs is not prog, then nothing is. Just listen to the mp3 on their site: http://www.cardiacs.com/audio/12_-_Cardiacs_-_Sampler_-_The_ everso_closely_guarded_line.mp3 And a full version of "Is This the Life" is also on the site: http://www.cardiacs.com/audio/01_-_Cardiacs_-_Sampler_-_Is_t his_the_life.mp3 Personally I think that their albums A Little Man and a House, On Land and in the Sea, Songs for Ships and Irons and Sing to God 1+2 are prog albums and great fun as well.

I agree 'The Ever So Closely Guarded Line' is about as prog as it gets Saskia also from their best album (IMO) On The Land And In The Sea. Sing To God 1+2 comes VERY close though... BTW Blacksword, Is This The Life as a great song but quite different from the rest of their material. I welcome anyone who is interested in Cardiacs but warn them that the ride is a dangerous one that can lead to a sordid life. My advice would be to catch them live before you bought an album.

Take care, it's a dark and slippery slope to get interested in THIS band. I hope you fall in though

Good luck. I'll be amazed if you like it. I've learnt to expect a negative reaction more often than a positive one. Cardiacs music is quite unlike anything else out there and they tend to push you out rather than pull you in. There's lots of melody but like King Crimson, it tends to be presented in rather 'unique' ways. I bloody love it. If you do like it, you'll be a friend for life but if you don't, thanks for playing anyway. |

Are you trying to frighten off potential Cardiacs fans? The Cardiacs
are an excentric bunch who play idiosyncratic music but only if you're
only familiar with mainstream prog. If you enjoy bands like VDGG,
Gentle Giant, Zappa, RIO bands, Magma and other bands that are
supposedly good for getting rid of stragglers at birthday parties,
there's no reason why you shouldn't like the Cardiacs as well. A friend
of mine borrowed a Cardiacs CD because I told him the Cardiacs were a
bit like that band in the way they could switch genres in one song. He
didn't like them because they were still too conventional and too much
like Genesis (Of course for non prog fans, everything that sounds even vaguely progressive is compared to Genesis and sl*gged off..)
Nice live shots of the Cardiacs BTW! Edited by Saskia |

That's not as far-fetched as it might seem. There are more similarities between Cardiacs and Genesis than meet the eye. Both bands are exponents of a typical British kind of eccentricity. I would say that I started to appreciate Cardiacs because they remind me a lot of Genesis. Check out the GEPR entry for Cardiacs: http://www.gepr.net/ca.html#CARDIACS |
